Synthesia is an AI avatar video platform built around scripted presenter videos: you paste a script, pick a stock or personal avatar, and it renders a talking-head video with voiceover in more than 160 languages. The free Basic tier gives 10 minutes of video a month with 9 avatars and a single editor. Starter is $29 a month (or $18 a month billed yearly) for 10 minutes of video a month, Creator is $89 a month (or $64 a month yearly) for 30 minutes a month plus 5 personal avatars and API access, and Enterprise is custom priced with unlimited minutes.
The most common complaint is the minute allowance. Starter gives 10 minutes of finished video a month, which is a couple of short training modules, and Creator only lifts that to 30 minutes. The annual plans pool minutes across the year (120 minutes on Starter, 360 on Creator), but there is no unlimited option below Enterprise. Personal avatars are gated to Creator, and Studio Avatars (the filmed, high-fidelity kind) are a $1,000 a year add-on that Synthesia only sells on annual plans.
Collaboration is also thin on the self-serve tiers: Starter and Creator each include one editor, with guests limited to 3 and 5 respectively, so a team that wants several people building videos is pushed toward Enterprise pricing. API access starts at Creator, and SAML SSO, SCORM export and brand kits are Enterprise only. If you mainly need a cheaper per-minute rate, a lower entry price, multiple editors, or an avatar tool bundled inside a general video editor, the alternatives below cover each of those cases.

Best for: Creators and marketers who want more avatar variety, photo avatars and higher resolution at a similar entry price.
HeyGen is the closest like-for-like replacement: script in, avatar video out, with more than 500 stock video avatars and video translation. Its free tier allows 3 videos a month with a watermark. Creator is $29 a month (or $24 a month on annual billing) for 600 credits, videos up to 30 minutes, 1080p export, voice cloning and unlimited photo avatars; Pro is $49 a month for 1,000 credits and 4K export. Business is $149 a month plus $20 per seat, and adds 5 custom video avatars, SAML SSO, SCORM export and integrations with n8n, Make, HubSpot and Zapier, several of which Synthesia reserves for Enterprise.

Best for: Learning and development teams that need SCORM exports, interactive video and multiple editors without an enterprise contract.
Colossyan is aimed squarely at workplace training. Its free Starter plan includes 20 minutes a month of video with the NEO model, 15 custom avatars, unlimited course creation and 15 auto translations a month. Professional is $59 a month for up to 3 editors, 30 minutes a month on NEO (10 minutes on the newer NEO2 model), watermark removal, unlimited MP4 downloads, AI image generation and 5 SCORM exports a month. Enterprise adds unlimited minutes, unlimited SCORM exports, SSO and EU or US data residency. The practical difference from Synthesia is that SCORM and multi-editor collaboration appear on a self-serve plan.
Best for: Buyers who want a transparent per-minute price and cheap add-ons for a selfie avatar or voice clone.
Elai.io publishes its per-minute economics on the pricing page, which makes budgeting easier than Synthesia's tiered minutes. The free plan gives 1 minute a month, Creator is $29 a month (or $23 a month yearly) for 15 minutes in full HD, and Team is $125 a month (or $100 a month yearly) for 50 minutes in 4K with 3 editors, 3 guests, 1 selfie avatar and 1 voice clone. Extra minutes are $2 each, a selfie avatar is $199 a year, a studio avatar is $500 a year and voice cloning is $200 a year, all well under Synthesia's $1,000 a year Studio Avatar add-on.

Best for: Teams that want AI avatars inside a full video editor with subtitles, dubbing and templates.
VEED is a browser video editor first, with AI avatars, text-to-video, auto subtitles and translation layered on top, so it suits teams whose avatar clips sit inside longer edited videos. VEED's own comparison pages list the Lite plan at $19 per editor a month on annual billing with watermark-free 1080p exports, and the Pro plan at $49 per editor a month on annual billing with all AI tools, translation into more than 50 languages and a custom brand kit. AI features draw from a credit pool, and VEED states that unused monthly credits expire at month end and annual credits expire at year end. The pricing table on veed.io loads dynamically, so confirm the current figures there.
Best for: Budget users who want a generous free tier and a large avatar and template library.
Vidnoz trades polish for volume: its free plan offers more than 1,800 avatars, 3,200 templates and 890 voices, capped at 3-minute videos and 720p export. Starter includes 15 credits a month plus 30 free daily credits, 60-minute videos, 1080p export and no watermark; Business raises that to 30 credits a month and adds unlimited photo avatars, voice cloning, video translation and a brand kit. Credits are consumed at 0.5 credits per second of standard avatar video, or 2 credits per second for expressive avatars. The pricing page shows introductory first-month prices of $1 and $15, so check the vendor's pricing page for the regular monthly rate before comparing it with Synthesia.
Best for: Developers and small teams who want talking-photo avatars, conversational agents and an API on a low monthly plan.
D-ID animates a still photo into a speaking presenter rather than relying on filmed stock avatars, and it sells the same minute pool across Studio videos, Agents, Video Translate and its API. Its pricing FAQ explains that video length is rounded up to the nearest 15 seconds and deducted from monthly minutes, that unused minutes do not carry over, and that Trial and Lite plan videos carry a D-ID watermark. The Studio plans run from a Lite tier up to an Advanced tier; the pricing table itself is rendered dynamically, so check the vendor's pricing page for current prices and minute allowances.
For a straight swap with better avatar variety and lower-tier access to SSO and SCORM, pick HeyGen. For training content that must export as SCORM and be built by several editors on a self-serve plan, Colossyan is the better fit. If you want predictable per-minute pricing and cheap personal avatar add-ons, Elai.io undercuts Synthesia's Studio Avatar fee by a wide margin, while VEED suits teams who would rather have avatars inside a general editor.
