Facts checked against both vendors on September 28, 2026.
Intercom is the stronger choice if you want AI to handle most conversations: Fin is priced at $0.99 per outcome on every plan and seats start at $29. Zendesk is the stronger choice for a large, process-heavy support operation with voice, skills-based routing and a mature ticketing model, where AI agents are metered by automated resolutions on top of per-agent seats from $55. Pick Intercom for messaging-first support with an AI agent at the front; pick Zendesk for an omnichannel service desk with AI added to it.

Revolutionize customer service with AI-driven, omnichannel support platform.
Intercom and Zendesk are the two platforms most support teams shortlist, and both now sell an AI agent that resolves conversations on its own plus an AI assistant for human agents. The difference is in how each is priced and what each was built around. Intercom grew from in-app messaging and has rebuilt itself around Fin, its AI agent. Zendesk grew from ticketing and has added AI agents, a Copilot and an AI knowledge base to its Suite.
Both bill in two dimensions: human seats and AI outcomes. Intercom charges $0.99 per Fin outcome. Zendesk includes a small number of automated resolutions per agent and charges $1.50 or $2.00 for each one after that. The figures below come from each vendor's pricing page as of September 2026.
Intercom is a customer service platform built around Fin, its AI agent, and a shared inbox. Its pricing page lists three seat tiers. Essential includes the Messenger, a shared inbox, ticketing, pre-built reports and a public help center. Advanced adds multiple inboxes, workflow automation, round-robin assignment, a multilingual help center and 20 free Lite seats. Expert adds SSO, HIPAA support, SLAs, multibrand capabilities and 50 free Lite seats. Fin is included on every plan and can also run on an existing help desk such as Salesforce or Zendesk without Intercom seats.
Zendesk is a service platform sold as a Suite of ticketing, messaging, live chat, telephony, help center and AI, or as Support-only plans. Suite Team includes AI agents, an AI knowledge base, AI Action Builder, omnichannel routing, messaging and live chat and telephony. Suite Professional adds Admin Copilot, AI App Builder, AI writing tools, AI quick reports, skills-based routing and an IVR phone tree. Suite Enterprise with Copilot adds intelligent triage, auto assist, generative AI for voice, approval workflows, a sandbox environment and custom agent roles. Zendesk's AI page describes its AI agents as resolving complex, multi-step workflows across channels and its Copilot as an assistant that recommends and can take next actions.
Intercom's pricing page lists Essential at $29 per seat a month, Advanced at $85 per seat a month and Expert at $132 per seat a month, with a toggle between annual and monthly billing; check the vendor's page for the rate at your billing term. Fin is priced from $0.99 per outcome. Intercom's Fin pricing page counts five billable outcomes: a resolution, where no further help is requested after Fin's last answer; a procedure handoff; a disqualification; and self-serve routing, each at $0.99; and a qualification at $9.99. Fin on a non-Intercom help desk has no seat cost but carries a minimum commitment. Add-ons are Copilot at $29 per agent a month billed annually or $35 monthly with unlimited usage, Pro from $99 a month with analysis of 1,000 conversations and 2,000 credits, and Proactive Support Plus at $99 a month with 500 messages. SMS, WhatsApp, phone and email campaigns are charged separately; live chat, support email and in-app chat are included. Startups can get up to 93% off and a year of Fin free through the Early Stage program.
Zendesk Suite Team is $55 per agent a month billed annually or $69 monthly. Suite Professional is $115 per agent a month billed annually or $149 monthly. Suite Enterprise with Copilot is priced through sales. A Support-only Team plan is $19 per agent a month billed annually or $25 monthly. AI agents are billed in automated resolutions: Suite Team and Support Team include 5 per agent a month, Suite Professional includes 10, and additional resolutions are $1.50 each on a committed volume or $2.00 pay-as-you-go. Copilot is a $50 per agent a month add-on paid yearly on Professional and above, and is bundled into Suite Enterprise.
AI at the front. Fin is on every plan at the same $0.99 per outcome, and its pricing page defines what you pay for: a resolution, a handoff, a disqualification or a routing decision. Zendesk includes only 5 or 10 automated resolutions per agent a month, then charges $1.50 to $2.00 each, so a team that wants AI to handle most volume pays roughly half as much per resolution with Intercom.
Lower entry price. Essential at $29 per seat is under Zendesk Suite Team's $55, and Advanced at $85 with 20 free Lite seats is under Suite Professional's $115. Copilot for human agents is $29 per agent billed annually against Zendesk's $50.
Fin without Intercom. You can run Fin on Salesforce, Zendesk or another help desk with no Intercom seats, which lets a Zendesk shop trial Intercom's AI agent without migrating.
Depth of the service desk. Suite Team includes telephony, omnichannel routing and an AI knowledge base; Professional adds skills-based routing, an IVR phone tree and AI quick reports; Enterprise adds approval workflows, a sandbox, custom agent roles and generative AI for voice. Intercom's phone, SMS and WhatsApp channels are usage-priced add-ons, and SLAs and multibrand require the $132 Expert tier.
A cheaper ticket-only option. Support Team at $19 per agent a month billed annually is the lowest seat price of either vendor for a team that only needs email and web ticketing with 5 automated resolutions per agent included.
Predictable AI spend for low volume. If a team resolves only a few conversations with AI, Zendesk's included resolutions cost nothing extra, and committed pricing at $1.50 gives finance a fixed number. Zendesk also sells its AI features as named tiers, so buyers can see exactly which AI capability arrives at which plan.
Pick Intercom if you want an AI agent to resolve a large share of conversations and want to pay per outcome from day one, if your support is messaging-first inside a product or website, if you want a lower seat price, or if you want to try Fin on your existing help desk before committing.
Pick Zendesk if you run a large, phone-heavy or process-heavy operation that needs skills-based routing, IVR, approval workflows and sandboxes, if you want a $19 ticket-only seat, or if your AI resolution volume is low enough that the included allowances cover it.
