Midjourney is the stronger choice if you want the best-looking images with the least setup, and you are happy to pay $10 to $120 a month for a hosted tool you cannot run yourself. Stable Diffusion is the stronger choice if you need open weights you can run locally, fine-tune, or build into a product, with a license that is free below $1 million in annual revenue. The two are less direct rivals than they were: Midjourney is a consumer subscription, Stability AI now sells Stable Diffusion mostly through an API and licenses.
Midjourney and Stable Diffusion were the two names most people learned first in AI image generation, and they still sit at opposite ends of the market. Midjourney is a closed, hosted service with a subscription, a web app and a distinctive house style. Stable Diffusion is a family of open-weight models from Stability AI that you can download, run on your own GPU, fine-tune and ship inside other software, or call through Stability's paid API.
The decision comes down to control versus convenience, and to who owns the compute. Everything below comes from the vendors' own pricing, documentation and license pages as of September 2026.
Midjourney is a subscription image and short video generator that runs on Midjourney's servers and is used through midjourney.com. The current default model is V8.2, released on July 24, 2026, which the vendor describes as an update focused on aesthetics, image quality and Personalization. V8.2 introduced an Edit Model that replaces the older Omni Reference, Character Reference and Retexture tools; V8.1 before it was Midjourney's fastest model, rendering standard jobs about four to five times faster than earlier versions and generating 2K images without an upscale step. The web Editor combines Remix, inpainting (Vary Region), Pan and Zoom Out, adds Layers and Smart Select, and accepts your own uploaded images. Every plan can also turn a still into a 5 second video and extend it four times by 4 seconds each, up to 21 seconds.
Stable Diffusion is the model family, not an app. The current open release is Stable Diffusion 3.5, announced October 22, 2024, in three variants: Large at 8.1 billion parameters, Large Turbo which generates in four steps, and Medium at 2.5 billion parameters that needs 9.9 GB of VRAM excluding text encoders and is designed to run on consumer GPUs. The weights are on Hugging Face and GitHub, and the models are also served through Stability's own API, Replicate, Fireworks AI, DeepInfra and ComfyUI. Stability's news page shows no successor image model since 3.5; the company's 2026 announcements are Stable Audio 3.0, a Brand Studio production platform, and a Series B round.
Midjourney sells GPU time. Basic is $10 a month or $96 a year and includes 3.3 hours (200 minutes) of Fast GPU time, three concurrent Fast jobs, SD-only video and no Relax mode. Standard is $30 a month or $288 a year with 15 hours of Fast time, unlimited Relax-mode images and SD and HD video. Pro is $60 a month or $576 a year with 30 hours of Fast time, unlimited Relax images and SD video, twelve concurrent Fast jobs and Stealth mode so your images do not appear publicly. Mega is $120 a month or $1,152 a year with 60 hours of Fast time. All plans carry the same General Commercial Terms, but companies earning more than $1,000,000 in gross revenue a year must be on Pro or Mega. Video is expensive relative to images: a batch of four SD videos costs 8 minutes of GPU time and four HD videos cost 26 minutes.
Stable Diffusion has two price tags. Running the weights yourself is covered by the Stability AI Community License: free for non-commercial use and free for commercial use by organizations with less than $1 million in annual revenue. Above that threshold you need an Enterprise License at custom pricing. Stability's API is billed in credits at $1 per 100 credits, with 25 free credits when you sign up through Google. The API reference lists Stable Image Ultra at 8 credits per result, Stable Image Core at 3, SD3.5 Large at 6.5, Large Turbo at 4, Medium at 3.5 and SD3.5 Flash at 2.5, so an SD3.5 Large image costs 6.5 cents. Edit tools such as erase, inpaint, search and replace and remove background are 5 credits, outpaint is 4, and the creative upscaler is 60. Stability's older consumer pricing page now redirects to a Brand Studio plans URL that returns a not-found page, so treat the API reference and the license page as the current sources.
Output quality with no configuration. You type a prompt on the website and get four images; there is no model to download, no sampler to pick and no GPU to own. Personalization learns your taste from the images you rate, and the V8.2 Edit Model lets you change an image with plain instructions rather than masks and node graphs.
Editing and video in one place. The Editor's inpainting, pan, zoom, layers and external image support cover most retouching without leaving the browser, and the image-to-video feature produces clips up to 21 seconds on every plan. Stable Diffusion 3.5 is an image model; video and audio from Stability are separate products.
Predictable cost for individuals. $10 a month for 200 minutes of Fast GPU time is a known number, and Standard's unlimited Relax images give a flat cost for heavy users. With self-hosted Stable Diffusion the cost is your hardware and your time; with the API it is per image.
Ownership and control. The weights run on your machine, offline if you like, with no content moderation queue and no public gallery. You can fine-tune them, train LoRAs, chain them into ComfyUI workflows, and keep your prompts and outputs entirely private. Midjourney's Stealth mode only hides your images from other members; the work still happens on Midjourney's servers.
Licensing that scales down to zero. Below $1 million in revenue, commercial use of SD3.5 costs nothing. Midjourney's cheapest plan is $10 a month and its commercial terms push any company over $1,000,000 in gross revenue onto $60 or $120 plans.
Distribution. SD3.5 is on Hugging Face, Replicate, Fireworks AI, DeepInfra and Stability's own API, so you can embed generation inside a product and choose the host. Midjourney has no public API listed on its plans page; it is a destination, not a component.
A usage-priced API. When you do not want to run hardware, Stability's credits let you pay 2.5 to 8 cents per image with no monthly minimum beyond buying credits, plus per-call edit and upscale tools.
Pick Midjourney if you are a designer, marketer or hobbyist who wants strong images quickly, wants editing and short video in the same tab, and prefers a fixed subscription. Choose Standard if you generate a lot, and Pro if you need Stealth or your company earns more than $1 million a year.
Pick Stable Diffusion if you are a developer, a studio with its own GPUs, or a business that needs to fine-tune a model, keep data on premises, or build image generation into software. Start with SD3.5 Medium on a consumer card, move to Large when quality matters, and budget for an Enterprise License once revenue passes $1 million. If you do not want to host anything, the Stability API at $1 per 100 credits is the cheaper route for low volumes.
