Grammarly is a writing assistant that checks spelling, grammar, tone and clarity everywhere you type, with generative AI prompts, rewrites and plagiarism and AI detection on paid plans. As of September 2026 the Free plan is $0 with 100 AI prompts a month, Pro is $12 per month with 2,000 AI prompts per member a month, and Enterprise is priced through sales with unlimited prompts, SAML SSO and data loss prevention. Grammarly's business page states that Grammarly is now delivered through Superhuman Go, a proactive assistant and agents that appear across your apps.
The plan that used to be called Premium is now Pro, and the Grammarly product itself is being folded into Superhuman Go, so the writing checker many people bought is becoming part of a broader, agent-led assistant. If all you want is a grammar and clarity checker, that is more product than you need, and the Free plan has been narrowed to spelling, grammar, tone detection and 100 AI prompts a month, with full-sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, plagiarism and AI-text detection all moved behind the $12 Pro plan.
The AI prompt meter is the other complaint: 2,000 prompts per member a month on Pro sounds generous until you learn that rewrites and tone changes count against it, and unlimited prompts require Enterprise. Team buyers also find that the Business tier is no longer listed with a price on the plans page, leaving Pro's 1 style guide, 1 brand tone and 2 user groups or a sales conversation for Enterprise. Meanwhile the alternatives have specialized: some go deeper on style and fiction editing, some are cheaper paraphrasers, some are built for academic writing, and general assistants can proofread a whole document for the same $20 that covers everything else.

Best for: Authors and long-form writers who want detailed style reports and a lifetime licence option
ProWritingAid is a style and grammar editor with over 25 writing analysis reports, a custom style guide and dictionary, and manuscript tools such as Chapter Critique. The Free plan checks 500 words at a time with 10 rephrases and 2 line-editing report runs a day. Premium is $30 per month, $120 per year or $399 for a lifetime licence with unlimited documents, unlimited line-editing reports and rephrases and 1 Chapter Critique a day. Premium Pro is $36 per month, $144 per year or $699 lifetime with 30 Chapter Critiques a day, live workshops and a library of over 200 sessions. On annual billing Premium is $10 per month, under Grammarly Pro, and the lifetime option has no Grammarly equivalent.

Best for: Students and non-native writers who mainly need paraphrasing, summarizing and a plagiarism check
QuillBot is a paraphrasing tool that has grown into a grammar checker, summarizer, citation generator, AI detector and humanizer. The Free plan paraphrases up to 125 words at a time with 2 modes. Premium is $8.33 per month billed annually, which QuillBot lists as 58% off, and unlocks full paraphrasing with 9 modes plus unlimited custom modes, 23 languages, advanced grammar recommendations, full access to the humanizer and AI detector, and custom summaries. The plagiarism checker allows 25,000 words a month on both Free and Premium. Team pricing is not shown on the page.
Best for: Quick rewrites and summaries in the browser for under $7 a month
Wordtune focuses on rewriting sentences and summarizing documents rather than exhaustive proofreading. The Basic plan is free with 10 rewrites and AI suggestions a day, 3 AI summaries a month and unlimited spelling and grammar checks. Advanced is $6.99 per month or $4.89 per month annually with 30 rewrites a day and 15 summaries a month. Unlimited is $9.99 per month or $6.99 per month annually with unlimited rewrites, summaries, vocabulary and clarity suggestions and premium support. A Business tier with SAML SSO and centralized billing is listed without a price. Both paid plans come with a 3-day free trial.
Best for: A Grammarly-style browser extension with typing shortcuts at a lower annual price
Linguix is a grammar, style and paraphrasing assistant delivered through a browser extension and web app. The Free plan includes grammar and spelling checks, basic AI suggestions, limited paraphrasing and typing shortcuts. Linguix Pro is $11.67 per month when billed annually at $140 a year and adds advanced grammar and style suggestions, more AI writing help, advanced paraphrasing and rewriting, unlimited typing shortcuts, clarity and tone suggestions and full cross-app access. Linguix promotes a 61% saving on annual billing and a 10-day money-back guarantee, and a separate Linguix Business offering exists without published pricing.
Best for: Academic and research writing with plagiarism, AI detection and citation support built in
Paperpal is a writing assistant built for academic manuscripts, with plugins for Microsoft Word, Chrome and Edge. The Free plan includes 200 grammar edits a month, a lite plagiarism report, 5 paraphrase or writing tool uses a day and 5 research Q&A uses a day. Prime is $86.40 per year, or $7.20 per month, with 20k edits a month, 10k words of plagiarism checking, 25k words of AI detection, 500 writing tool uses and 500 research Q&A uses a month. Pro is $208.80 per year, or $17.40 per month, with unlimited edits, 30k words of plagiarism checking and unlimited AI detection, writing tools and research Q&A. Prime is well under Grammarly Pro for researchers who need academic-specific checks.
Best for: Readability-first editing that highlights dense sentences, passive voice and adverbs
Hemingway Editor grades readability and highlights hard-to-read sentences, passive voice, adverbs and complex words, and the web editor's readability checker, grammar checker, paraphrasing tool and AI proofreader are offered free. Hemingway Editor Plus adds AI that fixes the highlighted issues for you, checks grammar and adjusts tone, and comes with a 2-week trial with no credit card required. The vendor's site did not display the Plus subscription price at the time of checking, so check the vendor's pricing page. Its narrow focus on clarity makes it a complement to, or a replacement for, Grammarly's clarity suggestions rather than a full grammar suite.

Best for: Proofreading whole documents inside a general assistant you may already pay for
ChatGPT can proofread, rewrite in a chosen tone and explain corrections on request, and it does so within a plan that also covers research, images and coding. The Free plan includes unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna and limited uploads, Go is $8 per month with more uploads and longer memory, and Plus is $20 per month with advanced reasoning on GPT-6, projects for keeping a style guide handy and custom GPTs you can set up as a house-style editor. It does not sit inside every text field the way Grammarly does, so it suits document-at-a-time editing rather than inline checking while you type.
If you want a like-for-like inline checker for less, Linguix Pro at $11.67 per month annually or Wordtune Unlimited at $6.99 per month annually are the closest swaps. Long-form and fiction writers should pick ProWritingAid, which is cheaper than Grammarly Pro on annual billing and offers a lifetime licence. Students and researchers should look at QuillBot Premium or Paperpal Prime, and anyone who already pays for ChatGPT Plus can move document proofreading there and drop the Grammarly bill entirely.
