Facts checked against both vendors on September 28, 2026.
Grammarly is the stronger choice if you want a writing assistant that follows you into every app and corrects, rewrites and generates in place, and you can pay $12 a month on an annual plan or $30 month to month for Pro. QuillBot is the stronger choice if your main job is paraphrasing, summarizing or checking text you paste into a tool, and you want Premium for $19.95 a month or $99.95 a year. Students and non-native writers tend to get more from QuillBot; professionals writing in email, docs and chat all day tend to get more from Grammarly.
Elevate writing with real-time grammar, tone, and plagiarism checks.
Grammarly and QuillBot overlap on grammar checking, paraphrasing, plagiarism detection and AI detection, so buyers often assume they are interchangeable. The difference is where the work happens. Grammarly is an always-on layer inside your browser, desktop and mobile apps. QuillBot is a set of web tools you bring text to, with extensions for Chrome and Word that expose the paraphraser and grammar checker.
Below is what each product is in September 2026, what it costs on the vendor's own pages, and where each is stronger.
Grammarly is now part of Superhuman, and the product is framed as an AI partner that turns your thoughts into clear, credible writing. The core is still proofreading for grammar, structure and clarity, with tone detection and tone suggestions. Around that sit a set of agents: an AI writing assistant for generating and rewriting text, a plagiarism checker, an AI detector, an AI humanizer, a citation generator and a citation finder, a reader reactions agent that predicts how an audience will respond, an AI grader, a resume builder, a paraphrasing tool and a translator. It runs as a browser extension for Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge, as desktop apps for Windows and Mac, as mobile apps and keyboards for iPhone, iPad and Android, and inside Microsoft Office and Google Docs.
QuillBot is a collection of writing tools. The Paraphraser is the flagship, with multiple rewriting modes and a custom mode on Premium. It also includes a grammar checker, an AI detector, an AI humanizer, a summarizer, a plagiarism checker, a citation generator and a translator. The vendor's own FAQ notes that several tools, including the citation generator, AI detector and translator, are free, and that the grammar checker and paraphraser are free with limited access. QuillBot's Premium adds paraphrasing in 23 languages and translation into more than 40.
Grammarly Free is $0 and covers basic spelling and grammar corrections, tone visibility and 100 AI prompts a month. Pro is $12 per member a month billed annually, or $30 a month billed monthly, and adds sentence rewrites, tone adjustment, English fluency help, plagiarism detection, AI-generated text detection, unlimited personalized suggestions, inclusive language support and citation consistency, with 2,000 AI prompts per member a month, two user groups, one style guide and one brand tone. Enterprise is custom priced, available through Superhuman Go, with unlimited AI prompts, unlimited user groups, style guides and brand tones, proactive AI, dedicated support, BYOK encryption, custom roles, data loss prevention and cost center visibility. A free Pro trial is available.
QuillBot Free is $0. On the free plan the Paraphraser handles up to 100 words at a time in two modes, the Summarizer has a 1,200-word limit, the AI Detector and AI Humanizer have limited access (the Humanizer up to 100 words), and the grammar checker fixes basic errors. Premium is $19.95 a month on monthly billing, $13.31 a month billed as $39.95 every three months, or $8.33 a month billed as $99.95 a year according to the vendor's pricing FAQ; the vendor's Premium page separately advertised $4.17 a month on annual billing when checked, so treat the annual rate as promotional and confirm it at checkout. Premium unlocks unlimited paraphrasing modes and custom modes, advanced grammar recommendations, full access to the Humanizer and AI Detector, custom summaries, plagiarism checking up to 25,000 words a month, tone insights, paraphrasing in 23 languages and translation into more than 40. A Team plan adds usage metrics, a user management dashboard, centralized billing, data control and priority support; its price is not published, so check the vendor's pricing page.
Coverage is the main advantage. Grammarly sits inside the apps you already write in, from Gmail and Slack to Word, Google Docs and your phone keyboard, and corrects as you type. QuillBot's extensions for Chrome and Word cover common cases, but the product model is still copy, paste, process, copy back.
Grammarly's paid tier is broader. Pro bundles tone adjustment, fluency suggestions for non-native writers, plagiarism and AI detection, citation consistency and a style guide and brand tone that apply across a small team. The agent set goes beyond editing: reader reactions, an AI grader for assignments, a citation finder and a resume builder are things QuillBot does not offer.
For organizations, Grammarly Enterprise is a real administrative product with unlimited style guides and brand tones, custom roles, data loss prevention, BYOK encryption and cost center reporting. QuillBot's Team plan is a lighter management layer over Premium. And on a long commitment Grammarly Pro at $12 a month is close to QuillBot's standard annual rate of $8.33 a month, so the price gap that once separated them has narrowed.
The Paraphraser is the best-developed tool of its kind in either product. QuillBot offers multiple modes on Premium plus a custom mode you define yourself, and the paraphraser works in 23 languages. Grammarly has a paraphrasing tool, but it is one agent among many rather than the center of the product.
QuillBot gives more away for free. Its citation generator, AI detector and translator are free, the paraphraser and grammar checker work free within limits, and the summarizer handles up to 1,200 words without paying. Grammarly's free tier is grammar, spelling, tone visibility and 100 AI prompts a month; rewrites, tone changes and plagiarism detection are Pro features.
Month to month, QuillBot Premium at $19.95 undercuts Grammarly Pro at $30, and the quarterly and annual options bring it lower still. Students, researchers and anyone whose main task is condensing, rephrasing or checking existing text get a more focused tool for less.
Pick Grammarly if you write for a living in email, documents and chat tools and want corrections, tone and rewrites without leaving the app. It suits professionals, managers and teams that need a shared style guide, and it is the only one of the two with an enterprise offering that IT and security teams can evaluate seriously.
Pick QuillBot if you paraphrase, summarize or translate regularly, if you are a student or non-native English writer working on essays and papers, or if you want the most capable free tier. Its Premium plan is the cheaper subscription on every billing cycle. If you need both an in-app corrector and a heavy paraphraser, the free QuillBot tools sit comfortably alongside a paid Grammarly plan.
