Facts checked against both vendors on September 28, 2026.
Canva is the stronger choice if you want AI generation inside a design tool you will use for the whole job, from templates to publishing, at US$144 a year for Pro. Adobe Firefly is the stronger choice if generation itself is the job and you want Adobe's commercially safe models alongside partner models from Google, OpenAI and others, from US$9.99 a month. Marketers and non-designers who need finished assets pick Canva; creative professionals who need volume, model choice and a licensing story pick Firefly.
Canva and Adobe Firefly are compared because both put generative AI in front of a broad audience, but they are different kinds of product. Canva is a design platform with AI features metered inside it. Firefly is Adobe's generative AI app and model family, sold on its own plans and also feeding Photoshop and Express.
This comparison uses each vendor's own pricing and help pages as of September 2026, and notes where the vendor does not publish a figure.
Canva is a browser and mobile design tool with more than 1,000 design types, template libraries, brand kits and collaboration built in. Its AI features run inside that editor and are grouped into three tiers that draw on a shared monthly allowance: Standard, Premium and Ultra. Photos can be generated at any tier, video generation needs Premium or Ultra (Ultra adds audio), and graphics, audio, 3D, forms, code, charts and sheets are currently Premium only. Canva's text-to-image runs on what it calls leading AI models without naming them on its product page. Generated images may be used for personal or commercial projects under Canva's AI Product Terms, with the caveat that you may not have exclusive rights and Canva does not guarantee clearance if an output resembles someone else's work. Canva also owns Leonardo AI, the multi-model image and video platform, though it is sold separately.
Adobe Firefly is described by Adobe as an AI-powered creative space for creating and editing images, videos, audio and vector graphics from text prompts. Its own models are Firefly Image 5, the Firefly Video Model and custom models in public beta. Partner models available inside the app include Google Gemini 3.1 with Nano Banana 2, OpenAI's GPT Image 1.5, Black Forest Labs' FLUX.2 [pro], Runway, Kling AI, Luma AI, Topaz Astra for upscaling and ElevenLabs for audio. Features cover text to image, generative fill and expand, object removal, upscaling, text to video and image to video, talking avatars, voiceover and speech, music and sound effects, dubbing and translation into more than 20 languages, text to vector and Firefly Boards for mood boards and storyboards. Adobe states that Firefly models are trained on licensed Adobe Stock and public domain content, that it does not train on users' content, and that outputs carry Content Credentials.
Canva Free is US$0 for one person with 5GB of storage, one Brand Kit limited to three colors, and up to 20 uses a month of Standard or Premium AI tools with no Ultra access. Pro is US$144 a year for one person with 100GB of storage, five Brand Kits and what the pricing page calls ten times more AI than Free; Canva's help center puts that at up to 200 Premium uses and 20 Ultra uses a month, with Standard tools not drawing from the allowance. Business is US$250 a year per person with 500GB, 100 Brand Kits and approvals and 20 times more AI than Free, which the help center states as 400 Premium and 40 Ultra uses a month. Enterprise is custom with 1TB, SSO, SCIM provisioning and 1,000 Brand Kits. The pricing page shows annual figures; check it for month-to-month rates. An AI Pass add-on for Pro and Business gives Canva's largest allowance, described as 40 times Pro and 20 times Business, but its price is not shown on the product page.
Adobe Firefly has a free plan with limited daily generations. Standard is US$9.99 a month with 2,000 generative credits, unlimited standard image and vector generations and up to 20 five-second videos. Pro is US$19.99 a month with 4,000 credits, up to 40 five-second videos, and Photoshop on web and mobile plus Adobe Express Premium bundled. Pro Plus is US$49.99 a month with 10,000 credits, unlimited generations on all image models at 1K and 2K and select video models, and up to 100 five-second videos. Premium is US$199.99 a month per license with 50,000 credits, unlimited access to the Firefly Video Model and unlimited generations on Veo 3.1 Fast, Kling 3.0 and all image models. Team plans run from US$19.99 to US$199.99 a month per license. Premium features such as video, audio and partner models consume credits; standard Firefly image and vector generation is unlimited on paid plans.
Canva finishes the job. Generation happens inside a layout with templates, brand fonts and colors, stock assets, collaboration and direct publishing to social and print. Firefly produces an asset; you then take it somewhere else, or into Photoshop and Express on the Pro plan, to make a deliverable.
The AI surface is wider than images. Canva's Premium tier covers graphics, charts, sheets, forms, code and 3D as well as photos and video, so a marketer can generate a chart, a form or a short video in the same allowance. Brand Kits, approvals and team administration on Business and Enterprise make it the easier platform to govern for a non-design team.
For occasional AI use, Canva is cheaper. Pro at US$144 a year is under US$12 a month and includes the whole design tool, five Brand Kits and 100GB of storage with 200 Premium AI uses. Firefly Standard at US$9.99 a month buys generation only.
Firefly is built for generation at volume with a choice of engines. Standard gives 2,000 credits and unlimited standard image and vector generation for US$9.99 a month, Pro Plus makes all image models unlimited at 1K and 2K, and Premium makes the Firefly Video Model unlimited. Canva's Pro allowance of 200 Premium uses and 20 Ultra uses a month is sized for a designer who occasionally generates, not for someone generating all day.
Model transparency and licensing are clearer. Adobe names its models and partners, states the training sources for its own models, commits not to train on user content and attaches Content Credentials to output. Canva says its generators run on leading models without naming them and explicitly does not guarantee that outputs are cleared for use. For agencies and brands with legal review, Firefly's commercially safe positioning is the difference.
Firefly's media range is deeper: text to video and image to video, talking avatars, speech, music, sound effects, dubbing into more than 20 languages, vector output and Firefly Boards. The Pro plan also bundles Photoshop on web and mobile and Express Premium, which gives a professional editing path Canva does not have.
Pick Canva if you or your team make marketing and communications material and want AI as one step in a template-driven workflow, with brand control and publishing in the same place. Pro suits individuals and Business suits teams that need approvals and shared Brand Kits.
Pick Adobe Firefly if generation is the core of your work, you need video, audio and vector as well as images, you want to choose between Adobe and partner models, or your organization needs Adobe's training and licensing statements to sign off on commercial use. Choose Pro if you also want Photoshop on web and mobile, Pro Plus or Premium if you generate at volume. Teams already on Canva who want serious generation capacity can either buy AI Pass or run Firefly alongside it.
