ChatGPT is the better general assistant: writing, coding through Codex, image creation, voice, projects and scheduled tasks all live in one $20 Plus plan. Perplexity is the better research front end: every answer is built from live sources with citations, and its Pro plan at the same $20 price lets you switch between OpenAI, Anthropic and Google models. Pick ChatGPT if you want one tool for most knowledge work; pick Perplexity if most of your questions need current, sourced answers.
ChatGPT and Perplexity are often bought for the same reason, to replace a browser tab full of searches, but they are built around different ideas. ChatGPT is OpenAI's assistant, and its plans are tiered by how much of OpenAI's own model family, image generation and Codex coding you can use. Perplexity is an answer engine that runs a web search for each query, cites its sources and lets you pick which vendor's model does the writing.
Both have a free tier, a $20 individual tier and a much more expensive power tier. The differences that matter to a buyer are what the free tiers hold back, how each meters usage, and which product fits the job you actually do. Everything below is taken from the vendors' own pricing and help pages as of September 2026.
ChatGPT is a chat assistant with a wide feature set. OpenAI's pricing page lists text chat, image creation, voice chats, file uploads, deep research, memory, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, ChatGPT Work on desktop, web and mobile, and Codex for coding tasks. Higher tiers get newer reasoning models: the pricing page names GPT-5.6 Luna on Free, GPT-6 reasoning models on Plus, and Pro reasoning powered by GPT-6 Astra on Pro.
Perplexity is a search and research tool first. Its help center describes practically unlimited basic searches on the free tier, Pro Search for multi-step reasoning, Research queries for deeper reports, Create for files and apps, file uploads including PDFs, CSVs, audio, video and images, and a choice of models that includes its own Sonar alongside GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro. The Max tier adds Perplexity Computer usage, a Brain memory system in research preview, and Max Assistant inside the Comet browser.
ChatGPT Free is $0 with unlimited text chats on GPT-5.6 Luna, limited uploads, limited and slower image generation, limited voice, limited deep research, limited memory and limited Codex access. Go is $8 a month and adds more messages with tools, more uploads, more image creation, more voice chats and longer memory. Plus is $20 a month and adds advanced reasoning models with GPT-6, expanded deep research, expanded memory and context, projects, scheduled tasks, custom GPTs, expanded Codex usage and early access to new features. Pro starts at $100 a month: OpenAI's help center describes Pro $100 as 5x the usage of Plus and Pro $200 as 20x, with the same Pro models, Codex, deep research, image creation and memory on both. As of September 10, 2026, OpenAI has paused new sign-ups and upgrades to the Pro $200 tier; existing subscriptions and the $100 tier are unaffected. Business is $20 per user a month billed annually for at least two users, or $25 billed monthly, with SAML SSO, MFA and no training on business data by default. Enterprise and Edu are sold through sales and add SCIM, EKM, role-based access, a Compliance API and data residency controls.
Perplexity's free tier includes practically unlimited basic searches, a very limited number of Pro Searches (the help center gives 3 a day), 1 Research query a month and limited file uploads. Pro is $20 a month according to Perplexity's Max launch post, or $17 a month billed annually on the Pro page, and includes extended Pro Search, advanced models, image and video generation, up to 50 file uploads per project, expanded Computer access and 4,000 bonus credits. Max is $167 a month billed annually on the vendor's Max page; check the pricing page for the monthly rate. It includes maximum Computer usage with 10,000 monthly credits and 35,000 bonus credits, frontier models, 400 Pro Searches a week and 50 Research queries a month, the Brain research preview, priority support and unlimited Labs. Enterprise Pro is $40 per seat a month or $400 a year; Enterprise Max is $325 per seat a month or $3,250 a year, with higher file limits and up to 15 video generations a month. Education Pro is a discounted plan for verified students and educators.
Breadth. A single Plus subscription covers writing, analysis, image generation, voice, deep research, custom GPTs, scheduled tasks and Codex for coding across web, CLI and IDE. Perplexity does not try to be a coding assistant or an image and voice studio at the same depth.
The low end is cheaper. Go at $8 gives you more messages, uploads, images and longer memory for less than half of Perplexity Pro, and the free tier includes unlimited text chats rather than a capped number of premium searches.
The workspace story is more complete. Business seats come with SAML SSO and MFA at $20 per user, and OpenAI's Business page describes Standard and Premium seats that you can mix, with Premium giving 5x more usage and no five-hour limit. Enterprise adds SCIM, a Compliance API and data residency. Perplexity's enterprise tiers are strong on search and file limits but the vendor's pages do not describe an equivalent compliance API.
Sourced answers are the default, not a mode. Every Perplexity response is assembled from a live search with citations, so it is the better tool for current events, product research, competitive research and anything you will need to check. ChatGPT has deep research and web browsing, but its default mode is a model answer.
Model choice. Pro subscribers pick between Perplexity's own Sonar, GPT-5.2, Claude Sonnet 4.6 and Gemini 3.1 Pro, and Max gets frontier models from several labs as they release. ChatGPT is OpenAI's models only.
The annual price is lower. Pro is $17 a month billed annually against ChatGPT Plus at $20, and Max at $167 a month billed annually undercuts ChatGPT Pro's $200 tier, which is currently closed to new sign-ups anyway. Perplexity also sells a discounted Education Pro tier, and its Max page lists concrete allowances (10,000 monthly Computer credits, 400 Pro Searches a week, 50 Research queries a month) where OpenAI describes usage as multiples of Plus.
Pick ChatGPT if you want one assistant for writing, coding, images and voice, if you will use Codex or custom GPTs, or if you are buying seats for a team and need SSO, SCIM and compliance tooling from a single vendor.
Pick Perplexity if your work is mostly asking questions that need current, cited answers, if you want to switch models without switching tools, or if you want a cheaper annual plan. Many people run both: Perplexity for research, ChatGPT for producing the work that follows.
