Prices and features checked against each vendor on September 28, 2026.
Perplexity is an answer engine that responds to questions with cited sources, and on paid plans lets you choose between models from OpenAI, Anthropic and others, run deep research, and create documents and apps. As of September 2026 the Free plan is $0 with limited daily usage, Pro is $20 per month with 4,000 bonus credits, and a Business tier is $200 per month with 10,000 monthly credits plus 35,000 bonus credits. Perplexity Max is the top individual tier with quicker access to the latest models and the Max Assistant on the Comet browser; check the vendor's pricing page for its current price.
The most common reason is the gap in the plan ladder. Pro is $20 per month, and the next published step on Perplexity's pricing page is $200 per month, so a heavy user who exhausts Pro's usage has nowhere to go without a ten-fold increase. The plans are also described in relative terms, with Free listed as limited daily usage and Pro as 10x more web access and file uploads, and paid tiers now carry credit balances for computer use, video and asset generation that are consumed at rates the pricing page does not spell out. If you cannot predict what a month of research costs, budgeting is guesswork.
The second reason is dependence. Perplexity's model selection is its strength, but the models come from other labs, and the assistants that matter most in the top tiers run inside the Comet browser, so getting the full product means switching browsers too. Buyers who mainly want cited answers can now get citations from general assistants that also handle writing, coding and images, and buyers who need rigorous literature search have specialist tools built on academic paper indexes with explicit monthly limits. The alternatives below cover both directions.

Best for: Deep research plus a full general assistant at the same $20
ChatGPT includes deep research in every plan, with limited use on Free, and its Plus plan at $20 per month adds enhanced deep research, advanced reasoning on GPT-6, projects, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Go at $8 per month sits between Free and Plus with more messages and uploads. Pro from $100 per month gives 5x more usage and maximum deep research with expanded memory, which is a lower top tier than Perplexity's $200 Business plan. The main thing you give up is Perplexity's cross-lab model menu; ChatGPT only runs OpenAI models.

Best for: Deep Research and Deep Search backed by Google's index, with storage included
Google Gemini's Free tier includes Deep Research, image generation and editing, Gemini Live, Canvas and Gems with 15 GB of storage. Google AI Plus is $4.99 per month with 2x the Free usage limits and 400 GB of storage. Google AI Pro is $19.99 per month with 4x the Free limits, higher access to Gemini 3 Pro, Deep Search and agentic capabilities, 5 TB of storage and YouTube Premium Lite. Google AI Ultra starts at $99.99 per month with a $199.99 tier for up to 20x Pro limits and Deep Think. For research that leans on web search, Gemini uses Google's own index, and the free tier is a reasonable substitute for Perplexity Free.

Best for: Analyzing long sources you already have, with web search and projects to keep them organized
Claude's Free plan includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory, artifacts and up to 5 projects. Pro is $20 per month or $17 per month annually and adds the Opus model, Claude Code, connectors, Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365, and at least 5x more usage per 5-hour session than Free. Max is $100 per month for 5x Pro usage or $200 for 20x, which gives Claude a $100 step that Perplexity's individual ladder lacks. Claude is strongest when the research material is documents you upload rather than open web search, and its projects hold sources across many sessions.

Best for: Evidence-based answers drawn from peer-reviewed papers with clear monthly limits
Consensus is a search engine over academic research that summarizes what the literature says on a question. The Free plan includes 10 Pro messages a month and up to 3 Deep reviews a month. Pro is $12 per month or $144 per year with unlimited Pro messages, 15 Deep reviews a month and 500 API and MCP uses included. Deep is $45 per month or $540 per year with 200 Deep reviews a month and 2,000 API and MCP uses, with extra uses at $0.05 each. Students, faculty and US healthcare professionals can get up to 40% off. Every answer is grounded in papers rather than web pages, which is the point of choosing it over Perplexity.
Best for: Systematic literature reviews and structured data extraction from papers
Elicit is a research assistant that searches across more than 138M papers, extracts data into tables and runs systematic reviews. The Basic plan is free with unlimited search, summaries and chat with papers, and limited usage of the Research Agent and Research Reports. Pro is $49 per month when billed annually at $588 a year, with the ability to screen 5,000 papers, add 20 table columns, extract from up to 135 data sources and set 10 research alerts. Scale is $169 per month billed annually at $2,028 a year with 5x usage, 200 data sources, figure extraction and team collaboration. It is a research workflow tool, not a chat replacement, so it suits people who found Perplexity too shallow for academic work.

Best for: Checking how a claim has been supported or contradicted in the citing literature
scite indexes over 300M papers and shows Smart Citations that classify whether later papers support or contrast a claim. The Connect plan is free with 25 MCP credits a month but no Assistant or Search access. Basic is $14 per month billed annually with full Assistant and Search access, 250 MCP credits a month, article Smart Citation reports, collections up to 1,000 papers and citation alerts. Pro is $35 per month billed annually with API access, 2,500 MCP credits a month, collections up to 10,000 papers and patent, clinical trial and grant datasets. Basic costs less than Perplexity Pro and answers a question Perplexity cannot: whether the evidence behind a citation actually holds up.

Best for: Answers about what is happening right now, free to start
Grok is xAI's assistant for chat, search and reasoning, with image and video generation. xAI describes it as free to try on the web and in the apps, with answers grounded in what is happening now, step-by-step reasoning you can follow, threads with public share links, and synced history across web, iOS and Android. SuperGrok is the paid upgrade for higher limits, priority access and multi-agent reasoning, and the same models are available through xAI's API. The SuperGrok price is not shown on the Grok product page, so check the vendor's pricing page before comparing it with Perplexity Pro.
If you want cited web research inside a general assistant, ChatGPT Plus or Google AI Pro at about $20 replace Perplexity Pro and add far more beyond search, and Gemini's free tier is the best no-cost substitute. If your research is academic, Consensus Pro at $12 per month or scite Basic at $14 per month give paper-grounded answers with published limits, and Elicit is the pick for full systematic reviews. Claude is the choice when the sources are your own documents rather than the open web.
