Facts checked against both vendors on September 28, 2026.
Ideogram is the stronger choice if your work is graphic design with text: posters, logos, ads, thumbnails and layered assets, with private generation from $15 a month on an annual plan. Leonardo AI is the stronger choice if you want a multi-model production platform with video, custom model training, an API and a free tier, from $12 a month or $10 a month billed yearly. Leonardo even hosts Ideogram 3.0 as one of its models, so the question is whether you want Ideogram's own design tools or Leonardo's breadth.
Transform text to stunning visuals with AI, enhancing creativity and collaboration.
Ideogram and Leonardo AI are both web-based image generators with their own models and credit-based subscriptions, and they are often shortlisted together by designers and small studios. Ideogram is focused: text rendering, design editing and consistency tools around its own 4.0 workflows. Leonardo, owned by Canva, is broad: its own Lucid models plus a roster of third-party image and video engines, training, editing, 3D, audio and a developer API.
Everything below is taken from the vendors' pricing pages and documentation as of September 2026.
Ideogram generates images through its web app and an API. The current Ideogram 4.0 workflows cover background removal, prompt-based editing, layerizing an image into editable text layers, extend, reframe, upscale, remix and Magic Fill. The documentation also lists Batch Generation from a spreadsheet, a Background Remover that produces transparent PNGs, Describe for turning an image into a prompt, Character Reference and Style Reference, Remix, Search and Upscale. Ideogram Canvas is an infinite board for organizing, generating, editing and combining images, with Magic Fill for inpainting a selected region and Extend for outpainting past the original borders. Magic Prompt uses a language model to refine and expand your prompt. Legible text and precise prompt adherence are what the vendor leads with.
Leonardo AI describes itself as the creator-first generative AI platform. Its own models are Lucid Origin and Lucid Realism, and it hosts GPT-Image-2, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro, Krea 2 Turbo, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Flux.2 Pro and Ideogram 3.0 for images, and Seedance 2.5, FLUX 3 Video, MiniMax H3, Hailuo 2.3 and Kling 3.0 Turbo for video, with synced audio on select models. Editing includes prompt-based edits with reference images, inpainting, outpainting and a universal upscaler. Premium and Ultimate subscribers can train custom models on their own images. There is 3D generation through Rodin V2, music and audio generation, a Teams plan with a shared token pool and a self-serve developer API on pay-as-you-go pricing.
Ideogram Free grants slow credits weekly to eligible accounts, allows one running or queued generation at a time and keeps images public. Plus is $15 a month billed annually ($180 a year), with 1,000 priority credits a month, unlimited slow credits, eight running or queued generations, private generation and unlimited character consistency; the pricing page shows a higher struck-through monthly figure, so check it for month-to-month pricing. Pro is $42 a month billed annually ($504 a year), with 3,500 priority credits a month, Batch Generation and quality export. Team is $20 per user a month on annual billing only, with 1,500 priority credits per user and a minimum of two users. Enterprise is custom and post-paid. Monthly priority credits expire at the end of each billing cycle; purchased top-ups carry over and expire a year after purchase. The credits a generation consumes depend on the model, render speed, number of images, resolution and workflow.
Leonardo Free gives 150 fast tokens refreshed daily with commercial use included. Essential is $12 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly, with 8,500 fast tokens a month, a 25,500-token rollover bank, two concurrent generations and token top-ups, but no relaxed generation. Premium is $30 a month, or $24 billed yearly, with 25,000 tokens, a 75,000-token rollover bank, three concurrent generations and unlimited relaxed image generation on select models such as Lucid Origin. Ultimate is $60 a month, or $48 billed yearly, with 60,000 tokens, a 180,000-token rollover bank, six concurrent generations and unlimited relaxed image and video generation on select models such as Lucid Origin and Hailuo 2.3. Relaxed generation is slowed at times of high demand. Teams starts from $72 for three seats. The API is pay as you go with no monthly fee.
Text and layout. Ideogram's models were built to render words correctly, and the 4.0 layerize workflow turns a generated design into editable text layers, which is unusual and directly useful for anything a designer would otherwise rebuild by hand. Leonardo hosts Ideogram 3.0 as one option among many, but that is the previous generation and it sits outside Ideogram's own Canvas and editing tools.
The design workflow is tighter. Canvas, Magic Fill, Extend, reframe, background removal to transparent PNG and quality export are aimed at finishing an asset. Batch Generation from a spreadsheet on Pro and Team produces variations at volume for ad sets or product ranges. Character Reference and Style Reference come as first-class settings, with unlimited character consistency from the Plus plan.
The credit model is easier to reason about for design work. Plus at $15 a month on annual billing gives 1,000 priority credits plus unlimited slow credits and private generation, so a designer can iterate freely in the slow queue and spend priority credits only when a deadline demands it.
Breadth of models. One Leonardo subscription covers its own Lucid Origin and Lucid Realism plus GPT-Image-2, Nano Banana 2 and Pro, Krea 2 Turbo, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Flux.2 Pro and Ideogram 3.0, and five video engines with synced audio on some. If one engine handles a brief badly, you switch. Ideogram offers its own models only and no video.
Production depth. Premium and Ultimate can train custom models on your own images for consistent characters, products or house styles, which goes further than a reference image. Prompt-based editing with references, inpainting, outpainting, a universal upscaler, 3D generation and audio are all in the same app.
Lower cost of entry and more flexibility. The Free plan gives 150 tokens a day with commercial use, Essential is $12 a month, and unused tokens roll into a bank on every paid plan instead of expiring at the end of the cycle as Ideogram's monthly priority credits do. Leonardo's API is self-serve and pay as you go, and Teams starts at $72 for three seats with a shared pool, which is cheaper than three Ideogram Team seats over a year.
Pick Ideogram if you are a graphic designer, marketer or small brand producing assets that carry text: social ads, posters, thumbnails, packaging mockups, logos. Its editing tools finish the job in one place, and Plus is a low-cost way to get private, consistent output.
Pick Leonardo AI if you need images and video from several models, want to train a model on your own subject, need an API for a product or pipeline, or want a free tier to evaluate before paying. It suits game studios, product teams and developers more than it suits a designer who mostly needs words to come out right. Because Leonardo includes Ideogram 3.0 among its models, a team that only occasionally needs Ideogram-style text can get by with Leonardo alone; a team that lives in text-heavy design should pay for Ideogram directly.
