Ideogram is a text-to-image generator known for rendering legible text inside images, which makes it popular for posters, logos, thumbnails and social graphics. Its pricing page lists a free plan with 10 slow credits a week, Basic at $8 a month for 400 priority credits, Plus at $20 a month for 1,000 priority credits and Pro at $60 a month for 3,500 priority credits, with annual billing discounted by up to 20 percent. Priority credits jump the queue; free users generate on slow credits, and Ideogram's docs note that reference and edit tools also run on slow credits for free accounts.
The free tier is the main reason people look elsewhere: 10 slow credits a week is enough to try the model, not to use it, and the reference and edit tools share that same tiny pool. On paid plans, unused subscription priority credits expire at the end of each billing cycle, so a quiet month is money lost, although purchased top-ups do carry over. Ideogram's own documentation says plan availability, prices and included credits are subject to change and points buyers to the live pricing page rather than committing figures to the docs, so it is worth confirming the numbers on ideogram.ai before subscribing.
The other driver is breadth. Ideogram is an image generator with editing tools, but it is not a video generator, a design suite or a real-time canvas. Buyers who want image and video from one subscription, unlimited relaxed generation, private generations at a lower price, or a model they can run on their own hardware tend to move to one of the platforms below.

Best for: Artists and designers who prioritize aesthetic quality and a large community of styles over text rendering.
Midjourney is the reference point for stylized image generation, now with video generation alongside images. Its documentation describes four tiers, Basic, Standard, Pro and Mega, each including a monthly allowance of fast GPU hours that does not carry over, with a 20 percent discount for annual commitment and extra fast hours sold at $4 an hour. Stealth Mode, which keeps your images and videos private, is limited to Pro and Mega. Midjourney's plan comparison page blocks automated access, so check the vendor's pricing page for current prices and hour allowances. Text inside images remains weaker than Ideogram's, but overall image quality and the remix tools are the draw.
Best for: Game and concept artists who want fine-tuned models, image-to-video and unlimited relaxed generation.
Leonardo.Ai combines image generation, custom model training, a canvas editor and video generation in one workspace. The free plan gives 150 fast tokens a day that do not accumulate. Essential is $12 a month (or $10 a month billed yearly) for 8,500 tokens a month, Premium is $30 a month (or $24 a month yearly) for 25,000 tokens plus unlimited relaxed image generation, and Ultimate is $60 a month (or $48 a month yearly) for 60,000 tokens plus unlimited relaxed image and video generation. Unused tokens roll into a bank holding up to three months of allowance, which is friendlier than Ideogram's expiring priority credits.
Best for: Teams that need commercially safe output and integration with Photoshop, Illustrator and Express.
Adobe Firefly generates images, vectors, video and audio inside the Firefly web app and the Creative Cloud apps, and Adobe positions its own models as commercially safe. Adobe's plans page lists a free tier with daily limits, Firefly Standard at US$9.99 a month for 2,000 generative credits, and Pro, Pro Plus and Premium tiers at 4,000, 10,000 and 50,000 credits a month; the plans page shows prices in local currency, so check it for the higher tiers in your region. Firefly also gives access to partner models from within the same interface. It is the obvious choice if your work already lives in Adobe tools.
Best for: Creators who want real-time generation, upscaling and access to many image and video models from one plan.
Krea is a multi-model workspace with real-time image generation, an enhancer and upscaler, video models, LoRA training and a node-based workflow builder. Its pricing page lists a free plan with 100 compute units a day, Basic at $9 a month (or $5 a month billed yearly) for 5,000 units, Pro at $35 a month for 20,000 units with all video models, and Max at $105 a month for 60,000 units with unlimited relaxed generation and unlimited LoRA training. Compute units do not roll over on individual plans. Compared with Ideogram, you trade a single specialist model for a switchboard of models under one subscription.
Best for: Casual users who want a simple free tier and an unlimited image plan at a fixed price.
Playground has become a template-driven design and image tool that routes prompts to several models, including Muse Image, Nano Banana, GPT Image and Seedream. The free plan allows up to 10 images every 3 hours with slower generation at peak times. Pro is $15 a month (or $12 a month with the annual discount) for up to 75 images every 3 hours, 150 monthly credits and 2K editing; Pro Plus is $45 a month (or $36 a month annually) for unlimited image generations, 1,000 credits, 4K editing and unlimited upscaling. All tiers include a worldwide royalty-free commercial license, and the free tier is far more usable than Ideogram's 10 credits a week.

Best for: Marketers who need generated images dropped straight into layouts, presentations and social posts.
Canva's AI image tools sit inside its design editor, so the generated picture lands directly in a template rather than in a download folder. Canva Free includes up to 20 uses of its Standard or Premium AI tools a month. Canva Pro is $144 a year (which Canva presents as $12 a month) and includes up to 200 uses of Premium AI tools or 20 uses of Ultra AI tools a month, with Standard AI tools not counting against the allowance on paid plans. It will not match Ideogram for raw generation control, but for poster or social work the layout tools may matter more than the model.

Best for: Developers who want to self-host an open-weight model or pay per image through an API.
FLUX is Black Forest Labs' family of image models, available as open weights and through a hosted API. The company's pricing page lists FLUX.2, FLUX.2 Max, FLUX.2 Klein and FLUX Tools alongside newer FLUX 3 video and action models, with per-second pricing shown for video and licensing tiers for open weights that start with a Builder tier covering 10,000 images a month and run up to enterprise volumes, including fine-tuning and LoRA rights. There is no consumer subscription, so this is a fit for teams building their own pipeline rather than individuals wanting a web app. Check the vendor's pricing page for current per-image API rates.
Leonardo.Ai is the best all-round replacement, with a bigger free allowance, token rollover and unlimited relaxed generation on Premium. Pick Midjourney if image quality and style matter more than text rendering, Adobe Firefly if you need commercially safe output inside Creative Cloud, Krea if you want many models and real-time tools from one plan, and FLUX if you would rather self-host or pay per image through an API.
