Midjourney vs Leonardo: Which Should You Pick?

What each tool is

Midjourney generates images and short videos on the web at midjourney.com and through Discord. The default model as of July 2026 is V8.2, which the vendor describes as more creative, bold and sophisticated, with improved personalization and an Edit Model that replaces the earlier reference tools. V8.1 is the fastest model, rendering standard jobs about four to five times faster than before, with 2K HD output and a Raw mode. V7 remains available and is the version that supports Omni Reference for carrying a character or object from a reference image into new scenes, at double GPU cost. Niji 7 covers anime and illustrative styles. Draft Mode on V8.x returns 24 low-resolution images for 0.4 GPU minutes, web only, and Conversational Mode writes prompts from plain-language or spoken descriptions. Video starts from an image, runs five seconds and extends four times to 21 seconds, at 480p by default and 720p HD in Fast Mode on Standard and above.

Leonardo AI calls itself the creator-first generative AI platform. Its own image model is Lucid Origin, alongside Lucid Realism, and it hosts third-party models including GPT-Image-2, Nano Banana 2 and Nano Banana Pro, Krea 2 Turbo, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Flux.2 Pro and Ideogram 3.0. Video models include Seedance 2.5, FLUX 3 Video, MiniMax H3, Hailuo 2.3 and Kling 3.0 Turbo, with synced audio on select models. Editing covers prompt-based edits with reference images, inpainting and outpainting, and a universal upscaler. Premium and Ultimate subscribers can train custom models from a set of their own images. There is 3D generation through Rodin V2, music and audio generation, a Teams product and a self-serve developer API priced pay as you go.

Midjourney has no free plan. Basic is $10 a month, or $8 a month billed annually ($96 a year), with 3.3 hours of Fast GPU time a month, three concurrent Fast image jobs, one concurrent Fast video job, no Relax Mode and no Stealth Mode. Standard is $30 a month, or $24 billed annually ($288 a year), with 15 Fast hours, unlimited Relax Mode images and three concurrent jobs. Pro is $60 a month, or $48 billed annually ($576 a year), with 30 Fast hours, unlimited Relax images and SD video, Stealth Mode for private work, twelve concurrent Fast image jobs and six concurrent Fast video jobs. Mega is $120 a month, or $96 billed annually ($1,152 a year), with 60 Fast hours and twelve concurrent Fast video jobs. Extra Fast GPU time is $4 an hour. Commercial use is allowed for subscribers, but companies with more than $1,000,000 in annual revenue must be on Pro or Mega.

Leonardo has a Free plan with 150 fast tokens refreshed daily and commercial use included. Essential is $12 a month, or $10 a month billed yearly, with 8,500 fast tokens a month, a rollover bank of 25,500 tokens, two concurrent generations and token top-ups, but no relaxed generation. Premium is $30 a month, or $24 billed yearly, with 25,000 tokens a month, a 75,000-token rollover bank, three concurrent generations and unlimited relaxed image generation on select models such as Lucid Origin. Ultimate is $60 a month, or $48 billed yearly, with 60,000 tokens a month, a 180,000-token rollover bank, six concurrent generations and unlimited relaxed image and video generation on select models such as Lucid Origin and Hailuo 2.3. Relaxed generation is slowed at times of high demand. Teams starts from $72 for three seats with a shared token pool. The API is pay as you go with no monthly fee, priced through a calculator in the app.

Where Midjourney wins

Midjourney's model is the product, and its output has a recognizable quality that many buyers choose it for: texture, lighting, composition and a personalization system that learns what you like. If you want one model that reliably produces striking images without switching between engines, that is Midjourney's case.

Unlimited Relax Mode starts lower. From Standard at $30 a month you get unlimited image generation in Relax Mode; Leonardo's unlimited relaxed image generation starts on Premium at the same $30 a month but applies only to select models. Midjourney's video Relax Mode on Pro also covers SD video without consuming Fast hours.

Midjourney has a set of exploration tools that suit iterative creative work: Draft Mode for 24 cheap variations, Conversational Mode for spoken or plain-language prompting, and Niji 7 for anime and illustration. The Discord community and the public gallery remain a large part of how people learn to prompt it.

Where Leonardo AI wins

Leonardo gives you many models in one subscription. Beyond its own Lucid Origin and Lucid Realism, it hosts GPT-Image-2, Nano Banana 2 and Pro, Krea 2 Turbo, Seedream 5.0 Pro, Flux.2 Pro and Ideogram 3.0, and for video Seedance 2.5, FLUX 3 Video, MiniMax H3, Hailuo 2.3 and Kling 3.0 Turbo with synced audio on select models. If a job needs a different engine, you switch rather than open another account. Midjourney offers its own models only.

It is more of a production tool. Prompt-based editing with reference images, inpainting, outpainting, a universal upscaler, background handling, 3D generation and audio all live in the same app, and Premium and Ultimate can train custom models on your own images for consistent characters, products or styles. Midjourney's consistency tools are Omni Reference on V7 at double cost and the Edit Model on V8.2.

Leonardo is cheaper to start and more open. There is a free plan with 150 daily tokens and commercial use, Essential is $12 a month, unused tokens roll into a bank on every paid plan, and there is a public developer API on pay-as-you-go pricing. Midjourney has no free plan, no rollover of Fast hours and no API.

Who should pick which

Pick Midjourney if you are an illustrator, concept artist or creative director who values a single distinctive aesthetic, wants unlimited Relax generation from $30 a month and does not need an API. Plan on Pro if your work must stay private or your company exceeds $1,000,000 in revenue.

Pick Leonardo AI if you are a production team, a game or product studio, or a developer who needs several image and video models, custom model training, editing and upscaling in one place, a free tier to trial with, and an API to build on. It is also the better fit if your budget starts at $12 a month rather than $30. Some teams keep both, using Midjourney for exploration and Leonardo for finishing and pipeline work.
