Facts checked against both vendors on September 28, 2026.
Notion AI is the stronger choice if your team's knowledge lives in documents and databases and you want an agent that works across them, but the full AI set requires the $20 per member Business plan. ClickUp is the stronger choice for task and project execution, and its AI is a cheaper add-on: Brain at $9 per user a month on top of a plan that starts at $7. Pick Notion for a workspace built around pages and wiki content; pick ClickUp for a workspace built around work items, and be ready to pay for the AI on either.

Enhance productivity with AI-driven content generation and analysis.
Notion and ClickUp both call themselves the one workspace for everything, and both now lead with AI. The products sit on different foundations. Notion is a document and database tool that has added meetings, mail, calendar and agents. ClickUp is a task and project manager that has added docs, chat, whiteboards and a family of AI assistants and agents.
The AI is packaged differently too. Notion folds Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search into its Business and Enterprise plans and meters custom agents with credits. ClickUp sells AI as per-user add-ons called Brain and Everything AI on top of any plan. The details below are from each vendor's pricing and product pages as of September 2026.
Notion is a workspace of pages, databases, forms, sites and Notion Calendar. Its AI product page describes Notion Agent, which takes on entire tasks using context from your workspace and connected apps to create and edit pages and databases; Custom Agents that automate recurring work on schedules or triggers and run whether you are online or not; AI Meeting Notes that transcribe and summarize conversations; Enterprise Search across your workspace and connected apps such as Slack and Google Drive; Research Mode for detailed reports; and AI blocks and database features such as Autofill and formula creation.
ClickUp is a project management platform with tasks, docs, chat, whiteboards, dashboards, forms, Gantt charts, sprints and time tracking. Its Brain page describes a single subscription that lets you switch between Claude, GPT and Gemini models with full access to your workspace context; Brain MAX, a voice-first desktop and mobile app; Talk to Text; an AI Notetaker that joins calls; Super Agents such as a Strategist, a Developer and a Visual Designer that build decks and designs; and a deep search that checks your workspace, connected apps and the web.
Notion Free is $0 with a trial of Notion AI, basic forms and sites, Notion Calendar, 5 MB file uploads, 7-day page history and up to 10 external guests. Plus is $10 per member a month with custom forms and sites, unlimited file uploads, unlimited charts and a limited trial of the AI features. Business is $20 per member a month and includes Notion Agent for chat, generation, autofill and translation, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search in beta, SAML SSO, granular database permissions, private teamspaces, page verification, domain verification and premium connections. Enterprise is custom priced and adds zero data retention with LLM providers, user provisioning, advanced security controls, audit logs and a customer success manager; other plans have 30-day AI data retention. Custom agents are free to try, then $10 per 1,000 monthly Notion credits, and Notion's AI page says they were free on Business and Enterprise through May 3, 2026. The pricing page advertises up to 20% savings with yearly billing, and a Plus plan limited to one member is free for students and educators.
ClickUp Free Forever is $0 with 60 MB of storage, unlimited tasks, unlimited free plan members, collaborative docs, kanban boards, sprint management and calendar view. Unlimited is $7 per user a month billed annually or $10 monthly and adds unlimited spaces, folders, forms, Gantt charts, integrations, storage, custom fields and native time tracking. Business is $12 per user a month billed annually or $19 monthly and adds unlimited dashboards with advanced cards, unlimited message history, webhooks and automation integrations, 5,000 automations a month, mind mapping, private whiteboards and custom exporting. Enterprise is custom priced with enterprise permissions and governance, unlimited custom roles, SAML SSO and SCIM provisioning, an audit log, 250,000 automations a month, custom branding and live onboarding. AI is an add-on: Brain is $7.20 per user a month billed annually or $9 monthly with unlimited Brain Assistant, unlimited @Brain Agent, unlimited AI chat across Claude, ChatGPT and Gemini, expanded premium model access and 1,500 AI Super Credits a month; Everything AI is $22.40 billed annually or $28 monthly and adds unlimited Ambient Answers, unlimited AI Notetaker, unlimited image generation, unlimited AI Fields, three times the Super Agent usage and 5,000 AI Super Credits a month.
The agent works on the content itself. Notion Agent creates and edits pages and databases using your workspace and connected apps as context, and Custom Agents run on schedules or triggers to answer questions in Slack and route work without anyone online. That fits teams whose work product is documents, specs, wikis and databases rather than tickets.
The AI is included, not stacked. On Business, Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search are part of the $20 seat; the only metered element is custom agent credits at $10 per 1,000. On ClickUp, a Business seat with Brain is $12 plus $7.20 billed annually, and the notetaker and image generation need the $22.40 Everything AI tier.
Data handling is spelled out. Notion's pricing page states 30-day retention with LLM providers on standard plans and zero data retention on Enterprise, which matters to security reviews. Notion also has the more mature document, form and site building, and a free student and educator Plus plan.
Execution features and price. Unlimited at $7 per user a month billed annually is cheaper than Notion Plus, and it includes Gantt charts, time tracking, unlimited custom fields and unlimited integrations. Business at $12 includes 5,000 automations a month, dashboards and whiteboards. If the job is running projects, ClickUp's plans include the tooling without AI.
Model choice and a desktop agent. Brain lets you switch between Claude, GPT and Gemini with the same workspace context, and Brain MAX is a voice-first desktop and mobile app with Talk to Text. Notion's AI page does not describe model switching or a standalone AI desktop app.
The AI add-on is optional and modular. Teams that do not want AI pay nothing for it; teams that do can start at $7.20 per user billed annually and step up to Everything AI for the notetaker, image generation, AI Fields and more Super Agent usage. Free plan members are unlimited, which is unusual among project tools.
Pick Notion AI if your organization runs on documents, wikis and databases, if you want an agent that edits that content and custom agents that run unattended, if AI Meeting Notes and Enterprise Search in the same seat matter, or if you need zero data retention at the Enterprise tier.
Pick ClickUp if your organization runs on tasks, sprints, timelines and dashboards, if you want a lower per-seat price with AI as an optional add-on, if you want to switch between Claude, GPT and Gemini, or if you want a voice-first AI desktop app and a notetaker on the Everything AI tier.
