Notion AI is the AI layer inside Notion's workspace: the Notion Agent that completes multi-step tasks using your pages, connected apps and the web, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search across tools like Slack and GitHub, and Research Mode for long reports. As of September 2026 Notion's plans are Free at $0, Plus at $10 per member per month, Business at $20 per member per month and Enterprise at custom pricing, with up to 20% savings on annual billing. Full Notion AI is included only on Business and Enterprise; Free and Plus get a limited trial.
The core complaint is that Notion AI is no longer something you can add to a cheap plan. Notion's pricing page lists AI as a limited trial on Free and Plus, and the full Notion Agent, AI Meeting Notes, Enterprise Search and Research Mode only arrive on Business at $20 per member per month. For a team on Plus that means doubling the per-seat cost to get AI, and because it is per member, every viewer and occasional editor who is a full member pays the same $20. On top of that, Notion's custom agents have moved to metered billing: the product page says they are free to try and then $10 per 1,000 Notion credits, and Workers, still in beta, also consume credits.
The second driver is that Notion AI is only useful inside Notion. If your knowledge lives in other tools, or you want an assistant that works across the browser and desktop rather than a workspace, the value collapses. Some teams want an AI docs and project tool with a cheaper AI add-on and explicit credit counts, and some individuals simply want an assistant at $20 that also does coding, research and images. The alternatives below cover both cases.

Best for: Teams that want tasks, docs and chat in one place with AI priced as a clear add-on
ClickUp is a work management platform with docs, tasks, dashboards and chat, and its AI is sold separately so you can add it to any plan. Free Forever is $0 with unlimited tasks, Unlimited is $10 per user per month or $7 annually, and Business is $19 per user per month or $12 annually with advanced dashboards and 5K automations a month. Brain AI is $9 per user per month for unlimited Brain Assistant, @Brain Agent and AI chat, and Everything AI is $28 per user per month adding unlimited ambient answers, an AI notetaker and image generation, with up to 20% off annually. Unlimited plus Brain AI on annual billing is $16 per user, under Notion Business's $20.
Best for: Small teams that want AI agents and automations with a published credit allowance
Taskade combines docs, tasks, mind maps and AI agents that can build apps and run automations. The Free plan is $0 with 6,000 one-time AI credits, 1 agent, up to 3 apps and 2 team members. Pro is $10 per month, or $120 per year, with 50,000 AI credits every month, unlimited agents and automations, 10 team members, 100 GB of storage and access to over 15 AI models. Business is $25 per month, or $300 per year, with 150,000 credits a month, unlimited members, custom domains, white labeling, SAML SSO and API access, and Max is $100 per month with 400,000 credits and autonomous agents. The credit counts are the contrast with Notion's limited trial wording.
Best for: Individuals and families who want beautiful documents with a light AI allowance for a few dollars
Craft is a native document and notes app for Apple and Windows with AI assistance built in. The Free plan is $0 with 15 AI credits. Plus was shown at $6.40 per month on the discounted rate, down from $8, with 50 AI credits a month and access to Craft's Core, Fast and Max AI models. Family is $12 per month discounted from $15 and bundles 2 to 6 Plus accounts, and Team is $50 per month for up to 10 Plus accounts. Craft's AI is modest compared with the Notion Agent, but for personal documents the whole plan costs less than Notion Plus, let alone Business.

Best for: A general assistant with projects and file uploads that is not tied to a workspace
ChatGPT is the broadest replacement if what you liked about Notion AI was asking questions over your own documents. The Free plan includes unlimited text chats with GPT-5.6 Luna and limited uploads, Go is $8 per month with more uploads and longer memory, and Plus is $20 per month with advanced reasoning on GPT-6, projects that hold files and instructions, scheduled tasks and custom GPTs. Business seats are $25 monthly or $20 annually with a 2-user minimum and include SAML SSO and no training on your data by default. Plus costs the same as Notion Business but is not limited to content stored in one workspace.

Best for: Deep document work, writing and analysis with projects and connectors to your other tools
Claude's projects and connectors do the job of Notion AI's question-answering over a knowledge base without requiring the knowledge to live in Notion. The Free plan includes web search, file creation, code execution, memory and up to 5 projects. Pro is $20 per month or $17 annually with the Opus model, Claude Code, Claude Design, Slides and Docs, connectors and Claude in Chrome and Microsoft 365. Team seats are $25 monthly or $20 annually for standard and $125 monthly or $100 annually for premium, with enterprise search, SSO and admin controls. Team standard seats cost the same as Notion Business but bring the assistant to every tool, not one.

Best for: Google Workspace users who want AI in Gmail, Docs and Drive plus storage
Google Gemini is bundled with Google's AI subscriptions and works inside Gmail, Docs and other Google apps. The Free tier includes Deep Research, Canvas, Gems and 15 GB of storage. Google AI Plus is $4.99 per month with 2x the Free limits, Gemini in Gmail and Docs and 400 GB of storage. Google AI Pro is $19.99 per month with 4x the limits, higher access to Gemini 3 Pro and Deep Search, 5 TB of storage, 5x more Audio Overviews in Gemini Notebook and YouTube Premium Lite. For a team already on Workspace, Gemini's document AI overlaps heavily with Notion AI at the same price, with storage thrown in.

Best for: People on Microsoft 365 who want research and analysis agents inside Word, Excel and Outlook
Microsoft Copilot brings AI into the Microsoft 365 apps and Teams. For individuals, Microsoft 365 Premium is $19.99 per month or $199.99 per year with Copilot in the Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook and OneNote desktop apps, AI image creation and agents for source-cited research reports and data analysis. For businesses, the Microsoft 365 Copilot Business add-on is $18 per user per month on annual billing or $25.20 monthly with Work IQ, reasoning AI and the Researcher, Analyst and Facilitator agents, and Business Standard with Copilot is $23.50 per user per month annually. That add-on price sits just under Notion Business for organizations already paying for Microsoft 365.
If you want to keep a docs-and-tasks workspace and only object to paying $20 per member for AI, ClickUp Unlimited with Brain AI or Taskade Pro at $10 per month gets you there for less with published limits. If your real need is an assistant over your own files, ChatGPT Plus or Claude Pro at $20 do that across every tool, and Gemini or Copilot do it inside Google or Microsoft apps you already pay for. Craft is the choice for individuals who want good documents and only a little AI.
