Runway vs KLING AI: Which Should You Pick?

What each tool is

Runway sells Gen-4.5, which it describes as its best video model for motion quality, prompt adherence and visual fidelity, and Aleph, a video-to-video editing model. Around them sit Runway Creative, a cloud editor for video, images and audio with an agent and iOS and Android apps; Runway Dev, an API platform with workflow and character tools; a Team plan with shared projects, pooled credits and Brand Kits for two to nine seats; and an Enterprise tier. Runway also lists GWM-1, a general world model, and Solaris, an interface-generating model, and its pricing page includes third-party Seedance 2.0 models next to its own.

Kling AI is a web and app platform for AI video and images. Kling VIDEO 3.0 generates 3 to 15 seconds of continuous video at 720p or 1080p, with Native Audio that references specific characters and their speech in Chinese, English, Japanese, Korean and Spanish including dialects and accents. A Multi-Shot feature reads scene coverage in your prompt and adjusts camera angles and compositions; Elements lock the traits of characters, items and scenes from multiple image references or a video reference; and the model preserves text from source images for use cases such as e-commerce advertising. Kling also offers a developer API with its own pricing page.

Pricing

Runway's Free plan gives 125 one-time credits. Standard is $15 a month or $12 billed annually with 625 credits and no watermark. Pro is $35 a month or $28 billed annually with 2,250 credits and 4K upscaling. Max is $95 a month or $76 billed annually with 9,500 credits, unlimited 4K upscaling, HDR, ProRes and image sequences. Storage runs from 5 GB on Free to 500 GB on Max. Gen-4.5 costs 60 credits per 5 seconds, or 12 credits a second; Aleph 2.0 costs 140 credits per 5 seconds; Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p is 160 credits per 4 seconds and Seedance 2.0 Fast is 116 per 4 seconds. Standard therefore buys about ten Gen-4.5 clips a month and Pro about 37.

Kling AI's membership page lists a free Basic tier and four paid plans, each with a discounted first month. Standard is $6.99 for the first month and $8.80 a month after, with 660 credits. Pro is $25.99 then $32.56 with 3,000 credits. Premier is $64.99 then $80.96 with 8,000 credits. Ultra is $127.99 then $159.99 with 26,000 credits. The page expresses this as a price per 100 credits: $1.06 on Standard, $0.87 on Pro, $0.81 on Premier and $0.49 on Ultra. All paid plans remove the watermark, allow commercial use of generated content and let you queue unlimited tasks.

Kling VIDEO 3.0 bills per second: 12 credits a second at 1080p with Native Audio, 9 at 720p with Native Audio, 8 at 1080p without audio and 6 at 720p without audio, plus 2 credits a second for Voice Control. A 5 second 1080p clip with dialogue is 60 credits. Kling's credit guide adds that 4K output is 30 credits a second and warns that costs depend on the model, feature and resolution shown in the generation panel, so check the panel before a large job. On that basis Standard's 660 credits buy about eleven 5 second 1080p clips with audio or 22 silent 720p clips a month.

Where Runway wins

Deliverables. Max exports HDR, ProRes and image sequences, and Pro and Max include 4K upscaling, which is what an editor or colorist needs. Kling's listed outputs are 720p and 1080p from the model, with 4K at 30 credits a second.

Editing existing footage. Aleph 2.0 is a video-to-video model for changing what is already shot, priced at 28 credits a second. Kling's strengths are generation and consistency of generated elements rather than transforming source video.

Teams, enterprise and developers. Pooled credits and Brand Kits for two to nine seats, an Enterprise tier, and Runway Dev with workflow and character tools. Kling has an API but its membership page describes individual plans.

Storage and a full editor. 100 GB on Pro and 500 GB on Max, inside a cloud editor that handles video, images and audio with mobile apps. Kling is a generation tool first.

Where Kling AI wins

Price per second. Kling's cheapest paid plan is $8.80 a month for 660 credits, or about $1.06 per 100 credits, falling to $0.49 per 100 on Ultra. Runway Standard is $15 for 625 credits. At the model level, Kling 3.0 at 1080p with audio is 12 credits a second, the same credit count as Gen-4.5 but on a cheaper credit, and silent 720p is half that.

Native audio and dialogue. Kling 3.0 generates speech tied to named characters in five languages with accents, and Voice Control adds direction for 2 credits a second. Runway's pricing page does not list per-second audio generation for Gen-4.5.

Longer continuous clips and multi-shot. Up to 15 seconds in one generation, with automatic camera coverage across shots, and Elements that hold characters and props steady across generations from image or video references.

Commercial use on every paid plan, watermark removed, unlimited queued tasks. The terms are on the membership page, not buried in a separate policy.

Who should pick which

Pick Runway if your output goes into a professional edit: you need ProRes or HDR, you upscale to 4K, you edit existing footage with Aleph, or you need team seats, enterprise terms or an API with workflow tooling. Pro at $28 a month billed annually is the working tier; Max for finishing.

Pick Kling AI if you are producing volume for social, advertising or previsualization, want dialogue and sound in the clip, and care about cost per second. Standard at $8.80 a month covers experimentation; Pro at $32.56 with 3,000 credits is about 50 dialogue clips of 5 seconds at 1080p. Check the generation panel for the current cost of the model and mode you pick, since Kling says these can change.
