Runway is the stronger choice if you want a first-party frontier video model, Gen-4.5, with a professional toolset, 4K upscaling, ProRes export and an API. Pika is the stronger choice if you want the cheapest way to try many third-party video, image and audio models in one app, with no watermark on any plan. Runway is a studio; Pika has become a storefront for models, including its own.
Runway and Pika both started as companies training their own video models. In 2026 they are different kinds of product. Runway still ships its own models, Gen-4.5 and Aleph, alongside a world model and a developer platform. Pika relaunched on September 17, 2026 as a unified creative platform that routes each job to a leading model, its own Pika 2.5 among them, and added a suite of audio models and an API membership.
Both sell credits, and both publish what a clip costs. The figures below come from the vendors' pricing pages, product pages and blogs as of September 2026.
Runway describes Gen-4.5 as its flagship video model, with state-of-the-art motion quality, prompt adherence and visual fidelity. Aleph is its video-to-video editing model. The company also lists GWM-1, a general world model, and Solaris, a model that generates interactive interfaces frame by frame. Runway Creative is the cloud editor for video, images and audio with an agent and iOS and Android apps; Runway Dev is the API platform with workflow and character tools; and a Team plan adds shared projects, pooled credits and Brand Kits for two to nine seats. Runway's pricing page also lists third-party Seedance 2.0 models alongside its own.
Pika is now a single app for AI video, AI image and AI audio, plus a developer API at dev.pika.art. Under the hood it routes to Pika 2.5, Seedance 2.5, MiniMax H3, Wan 3.0 and Google Omni Flash for video, and to models such as Nano Banana 2 and GPT Image 2.5 for images. On August 18, 2026 it released four audio models: Pika Soundtrack, which turns a video into a synchronized soundscape of effects, voice, music and ambience; Pika Music for full tracks from text, lyrics or a reference; Pika SFX for single sound effects; and Pika Speech for 48 kHz text-to-speech with voice cloning. An API Club membership launched August 5, 2026 at $10 a month, with the first month including $10 of usage credit, giving access to more than 100 video, image, audio and language models through one API.
Runway's Free plan gives 125 one-time credits. Standard is $15 a month or $12 a month billed annually with 625 credits and no watermark; Pro is $35 a month or $28 billed annually with 2,250 credits and 4K upscaling; Max is $95 a month or $76 billed annually with 9,500 credits, unlimited 4K upscaling and what the vendor calls studio-grade generations with HDR, ProRes and image sequences. Storage is 5 GB on Free, 20 GB on Standard, 100 GB on Pro and 500 GB on Max. Enterprise is sales-led. Credit costs are listed per model: Gen-4.5 is 60 credits for 5 seconds (12 a second), Aleph 2.0 is 140 credits for 5 seconds (28 a second), Seedance 2.0 Pro at 1080p is 160 credits for 4 seconds and Seedance 2.0 Fast is 116 credits for 4 seconds. On Standard that is about ten Gen-4.5 clips a month; on Pro about 37.
Pika's Free plan has no monthly credits and relies on credit packs. Starter is $10 a month or $8 billed annually with 900 credits; Creator is $35 a month or $28 billed annually with 3,150 credits; Fancy runs from $95 to $880 a month, or $76 to $704 billed annually, with 8,550 credits and up, unlimited parallel generations, a priority queue and, from $440 a month, early access to new models. No plan applies a watermark. A commercial license is included on Creator and Fancy only; Free and Starter are for personal use. Pika's page gives per-model costs: a 5 second 720p Seedance 2.5 video is 122 credits, a 5 second 720p Wan 3.0 video is 33 credits, a 1K Nano Banana 2 image is 8 credits and a 1K GPT Image 2.5 image is 2 credits. So Starter's 900 credits buy about seven Seedance 2.5 clips or 27 Wan 3.0 clips, and Creator's 3,150 credits about 25 or 95.
A frontier model of its own. Gen-4.5 and Aleph are Runway's, tuned to Runway's tools, and priced at 12 and 28 credits a second. Pika's own model is Pika 2.5, but its pricing examples lead with third-party Seedance and Wan, and its pitch is model choice rather than a single best model.
Professional finishing. Pro and Max add 4K upscaling, and Max adds HDR, ProRes and image sequence export, which is what a post-production pipeline expects. Pika's pricing page lists resolution per generation (720p in the examples) and does not mention ProRes or HDR.
Teams and enterprise. A Team plan with pooled credits and Brand Kits for two to nine seats, an Enterprise tier, and Runway Dev for API integration. Pika's team story is the Fancy tier's parallel generations and the API Club.
Platform breadth beyond video. Runway lists a world model, an interface model and a robotics offering; if you care about where the vendor is heading, Runway has a longer roadmap.
Cost of entry. Starter at $10 a month, or $8 billed annually, with 900 credits and no watermark undercuts Runway Standard at $15 with 625 credits. A 5 second Wan 3.0 clip costs 33 Pika credits, less than a third of a Gen-4.5 clip's 60 Runway credits.
Model choice in one place. Pika routes to Pika 2.5, Seedance 2.5, MiniMax H3, Wan 3.0 and Google Omni Flash for video, and to Nano Banana 2 and GPT Image 2.5 for images. Runway offers its own models plus Seedance 2.0; Pika offers a wider menu and promises early access to new models on the top Fancy tiers.
Audio. Soundtrack, Music, SFX and Speech are in the same app and API, so a silent clip can be scored, voiced and sound-designed without a second product. Runway Creative includes audio in its editor but does not list dedicated audio models on its product page.
A cheap API. The API Club at $10 a month with $10 of first-month usage exposes more than 100 models through one endpoint. Runway Dev exists but its pricing is not on the public pricing page.
Pick Runway if you are a filmmaker, agency or studio that wants one strong first-party model, ProRes and 4K deliverables, storage for large projects and a Team or Enterprise contract. Pro at $28 a month billed annually with 2,250 credits is the working tier; Max if you upscale to 4K routinely.
Pick Pika if you are a social creator, a small team or a developer who wants to try many models for the least money, needs audio generation in the same place, and does not need broadcast export formats. Starter is fine for personal experiments; move to Creator at $28 billed annually as soon as the work is commercial, because Starter has no commercial license.
