About Amazon Q Developer
Amazon Q Developer is the generative AI assistant AWS offers for the software development lifecycle. It generates, tests, documents and refactors code inside an IDE, answers questions and completes commands in a terminal, and sits in the AWS Management Console to explain resources, diagnose errors and advise on cost and architecture.
It is built for developers working in AWS environments and supports Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio and Eclipse, plus a command line tool that adds autocompletion, chat in the terminal and translation from natural language to bash. Agentic features let it implement a feature, write tests, review code and produce documentation across a project rather than one line at a time. Transformation agents handle Java version upgrades and porting .NET applications from Windows to Linux. Reference tracking and a switch to suppress suggestions that resemble public code are included, and the Pro tier adds IP indemnity.
AWS publishes two tiers. The Free tier costs nothing and includes 50 agentic requests per month, use in the IDE or CLI, general questions in the console, and 1,000 lines of code per month for Java transformation. The Pro tier is $19 per user per month and raises the agentic request limits, adds an admin dashboard with user and policy management through IAM Identity Center, opts the account out of data collection automatically, and provides 4,000 lines of code per user per month for transformation, pooled at account level, with extra lines at $0.003 per line submitted.
The product page carries a notice that on April 30, 2027 AWS will discontinue support for the Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins, and it points developers to Kiro for agentic coding, chat and MCP support with the latest models. Teams choosing an editor integration today should plan around that date.
