Codeium no longer exists as a separate product: codeium.com redirects to windsurf.com, which redirects to devin.ai, where the editor is sold as Devin Desktop by Cognition. If you want an assistant inside your existing editor with GitHub-native agents at $10 a month, GitHub Copilot is the clear choice. If you want the successor to Codeium, you are choosing Devin Desktop, a full agent IDE with a free tier that includes unlimited Tab completions.

Developers still search for Codeium because it was the free autocomplete extension that competed head-on with Copilot. That product line has been renamed twice. Codeium became Windsurf, and in 2026 Windsurf became Devin Desktop under Cognition. Anyone comparing Codeium with GitHub Copilot today is really comparing Copilot with Devin Desktop and the surviving Windsurf plugins.

GitHub Copilot is an assistant that works inside the editors developers already use: Visual Studio Code, Visual Studio, JetBrains IDEs, Neovim, Xcode, Eclipse and Azure Data Studio. Beyond completions and chat it offers an agent mode in the editor, a cloud coding agent that takes GitHub issues and opens pull requests from a GitHub Actions environment, Copilot code review, a CLI, Copilot Spaces for shared context, MCP integration and a choice of models from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google and others.
Codeium is the former name of the company and extension that became Windsurf. codeium.com redirects to windsurf.com, which redirects to devin.ai/desktop, where Cognition states that Devin Desktop is the new name for Windsurf. Devin Desktop is a VS Code-derived IDE with an Agent Command Center (Spaces and a Kanban view for multiple agents), Fast Context, Supercomplete predictive completion, local agents through Devin Local, cloud agents through Devin Cloud, and an Agent Client Protocol for other agents and models. Windsurf for JetBrains continues as a separate plugin for IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm and WebStorm.
GitHub Copilot Free is $0 with 2,000 completions a month, a limited allowance of AI credits and automatic model selection only. Pro is $10 a month with 1,500 AI credits, Pro+ is $39 a month with 7,000 credits and access to premium models, and Max is $100 a month with 20,000 credits. One AI credit equals $0.01, unused credits do not carry over, and a $10 additional usage budget covers 1,000 credits. Business is $19 per user a month with 1,900 credits per user; Enterprise is $39 per user a month with 3,900 credits per user and requires GitHub Enterprise Cloud. Both organization plans include unlimited completions and next-edit suggestions outside the credit system.

There, Free is $0 with a light agent quota, limited model availability, unlimited inline edits and unlimited Tab completions. Pro is $20 a month with increased quotas, full model availability across OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and SpaceXAI plus open source models, Devin Cloud access, and extra usage at API pricing. Max is $200 a month with significantly higher quotas. Teams is $80 a month plus $40 a month per full developer seat, for up to 200 seats, with centralized billing, an admin dashboard and priority support. Enterprise is custom with SAML or OIDC SSO and Agent Compute Unit billing.
Stability and breadth. Copilot has kept the same name, the same editor integrations and the same GitHub anchoring while the Codeium line has been renamed twice. If you are picking a tool to standardize a team on, that continuity matters.
Editor coverage is wider. Copilot runs in Visual Studio, Xcode and Eclipse as well as VS Code and JetBrains, so .NET, iOS and Java developers keep their tools. The Codeium successor is a VS Code-derived desktop app plus a JetBrains plugin; there is no Visual Studio or Xcode path.
The cloud coding agent is built into GitHub. You assign an issue to Copilot, it works in a GitHub Actions environment and opens a pull request, using Actions minutes and AI credits that GitHub says are covered within your included allowances. Pricing is lower at every paid tier: $10 for Pro against $20, and $19 per user for Business against a flat $80 plus $40 per seat.
The free tier carries on the Codeium tradition of generous completions. Devin Desktop Free lists unlimited inline edits and unlimited Tab completions at $0, against Copilot Free's 2,000 completions a month. For someone who mainly wants autocomplete without paying, the Codeium successor still gives more away.
It is a full agent IDE rather than a plugin. The Command Center with Spaces and Kanban is designed for supervising several agents at once, and the Agent Client Protocol lets other agents and models connect. Pro at $20 includes Devin Cloud agents alongside the desktop editor, plus open source models alongside frontier ones, and through October 10, 2026 free use of SWE-2 Free in the desktop app and CLI.
The JetBrains plugin survives as Windsurf for JetBrains, so IntelliJ, PyCharm and WebStorm users can still get the completion engine without adopting the desktop app. Cognition's docs also say the desktop app imports settings and keybindings from VS Code and Cursor, which lowers the cost of trying it.
Pick GitHub Copilot if you want to keep your editor, if your team uses more than one IDE, if you want the lowest per-seat price, or if your development workflow runs through GitHub issues, pull requests and Actions. It is also the only option here that fits GitHub Enterprise Cloud governance directly.
Pick the Codeium successor, Devin Desktop, if you want unlimited free completions, if you are willing to work in a VS Code-style desktop app, or if you want Cognition's Devin Cloud agents bundled with your editor.
