Facts checked against both vendors on October 13, 2026.
Perplexity is an answer engine that cites its sources and routes your question across several vendors' models, including Google's. Gemini is Google's own model, sold inside a subscription that also carries cloud storage and puts AI into Gmail, Docs and Sheets. If your work is research and you need to see where an answer came from, Perplexity is built for that, and its paid tiers add licensed data from PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ that a general assistant does not have. If you live in Google's tools already, Gemini is better value by a distance: the entry plan is 4.99 US dollars a month against Perplexity Pro at 17, and it brings storage and document integration with it.
Perplexity and Gemini both answer questions, both run deep research tasks and both now drive agents, so they end up on the same shortlist. Underneath they are different kinds of business.
Perplexity does not train the models it serves. Its own documentation states that it orchestrates ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Anthropic Claude and NVIDIA Nemotron, choosing between them and wrapping the result in citations. Gemini is Google's own frontier model, sold as part of a Google AI subscription that bundles cloud storage and in product AI across Workspace.
That means a genuine oddity sits at the centre of this comparison: paying Perplexity can mean paying for access to Gemini, among others. What you are really buying from Perplexity is the retrieval, the sourcing and the routing. This comparison covers what each vendor publishes today, including where their own pages contradict each other.
Perplexity's value is in what happens around the model. It searches, it reads, it cites, and it picks which model answers. Its pricing page describes Free as access to basic AI models, Pro as access to top AI models with the ability to select a preferred model per query, and Max as frontier models plus advanced reasoning for deep investigations and large datasets. It also sells a browser, Comet, and metered Computer usage.
Gemini's value is in distribution. The Google AI plans put the model where your work already is: Gemini in Gmail for proofreading on the entry plan, and Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets from the Pro plan upward. The same subscription carries cloud storage across Gmail, Drive and Photos, from 400GB on Plus through 5TB on Pro to 20TB and 30TB on the two Ultra tiers.
So the honest framing is this. Perplexity is a research tool you go to. Gemini is a capability added to software you are already in. Which is worth more depends entirely on whether you spend your day in a browser tab or in a Google Doc.
Google is substantially cheaper to start. Google AI Plus is 4.99 US dollars a month, with 400GB of storage, roughly double the Gemini usage of a non subscriber, more access to Gemini 3.1 Pro, more Deep Research and Gemini in Gmail. Google AI Pro is 19.99 a month with 5TB of storage, four times the baseline usage, Gemini Spark as an agent, Veo 3.1 video generation in Google Flow, and Gemini across Gmail, Docs and Sheets.
Perplexity's pricing page lists Free at 0 US dollars, Pro at 17 a month when billed annually, and Max at 167 a month when billed annually. Perplexity's help centre gives the Max figure as 200 a month, or 2,000 a year, which reconciles with the 167 annual rate. Enterprise Pro is 40 per seat a month or 400 a year, and Enterprise Max is 325 per seat a month or 3,250 a year.
The comparison that matters for most individuals is Google AI Pro at 19.99 against Perplexity Pro at 17 on annual billing. They are close enough that price should not decide it. The gap is at the entry level, where Google AI Plus at 4.99 has no Perplexity equivalent at all.
One caveat on Google's figures: its own I/O 2026 announcement describes reducing the top Ultra plan from 250 to 200 a month and introducing a 100 tier, while the plans page shows Ultra starting at 99.99 for the 5x tier and 199.99 for 20x. The two descriptions are reconcilable but not identical, and prices vary by country. Check the figure on the sign up page for your own region before subscribing.
This is Perplexity's strongest ground and the clearest reason to pay for it.
Every Perplexity answer is built around retrieved sources, which is a different product behaviour from a model answering from training. For anyone who has to check a claim before repeating it, that is not a nicety, it is the whole point. Deep Research is included on Pro, and Max adds expert level research and higher Deep Research limits, though no numeric cap is published.
The part that is harder to replicate is the licensed data. Perplexity's FAQ states that Pro and Max include premium sources: PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ. If you work in finance, strategy or market research, those are paid subscriptions in their own right, and their presence inside a 17 dollar plan is a real argument that no general assistant answers.
Gemini also offers Deep Research across all the AI plans, with more access as you move up the tiers, and the Ultra plans add Deep Think for harder reasoning. Gemini's retrieval advantage is different in kind: it is wired into Google Search through AI Mode, which is the largest index there is. What it does not do is hand you a licensed financial data set.
Both have moved into agents, and both are still clearly in progress.
Google puts Gemini Spark on the Pro plan and above as its agent, and a separate Gemini Agent on the Ultra tiers. Note one real constraint: Gemini Agent is documented as available in the United States in English only. If you are outside the US, that feature is not yet a reason to buy Ultra.
Perplexity sells Comet, its own browser, with a Comet Assistant, and meters agentic work as Computer usage. Free and Pro show no monthly Computer credits on the comparison table; Max lists 10,000 a month, plus 35,000 bonus credits, against 4,000 bonus credits on Pro. Perplexity also publishes more than 400 app connectors and a Model Council feature on Pro and Max that puts several models on the same question.
On generation, the split is clear. Google's plans include Veo 3.1 video generation through Google Flow from the Pro tier, with higher access on Ultra. Perplexity lists asset and video generation on its table but without plan level clarity, showing values such as 10x and 5x that the page does not map cleanly to tiers.
Worth knowing before committing to an annual term, because both vendors publish comparison tables that do not fully resolve.
On Perplexity's page, the Free plan is called limited daily usage on the plan card and limited weekly usage in the FAQ, which are different things. File uploads and asset generation show values such as limited and 10x without the page making clear which belongs to which plan, and no search count is published for any tier.
On Google's side, the plans page lists 400GB for AI Plus while its comparison table also shows 2TB, and a help page describes Plus as a choice between the two. The Ultra pricing discrepancy above sits in the same category.
Both products are changing quickly and their pages lag. If a specific limit is the reason you are buying, confirm it in your own account on a monthly plan first.
Built from each tool's listing. Vendors can update their own listing after claiming it.
Free is 0 US dollars with access to basic AI models and limited usage, which the plan card calls daily and the FAQ calls weekly. Pro is 17 a month when billed annually, adding access to top AI models, per query model selection, Deep Research, 4,000 bonus credits, expanded Computer access, Model Council and premium data sources including PitchBook, Statista and S&P Capital IQ. Max is 167 a month when billed annually, which the help centre states as 200 monthly or 2,000 a year, adding frontier models, 35,000 bonus credits, 10,000 monthly Computer credits and higher research limits. Enterprise Pro is 40 per seat a month or 400 a year; Enterprise Max is 325 per seat a month or 3,250 a year.
Google AI Plus is 4.99 US dollars a month with 400GB of storage, roughly double the baseline Gemini usage, more access to Gemini 3.1 Pro and Deep Research, and Gemini in Gmail. Google AI Pro is 19.99 a month with 5TB, four times baseline usage, Gemini Spark, Veo 3.1 in Google Flow and Gemini in Gmail, Docs and Sheets. Google AI Ultra starts at 99.99 a month for the 5x tier with 20TB and Deep Think, and 199.99 for the 20x tier with 30TB. Google's own I/O 2026 announcement describes the top tier moving from 250 to 200 and a new 100 tier, so confirm the current figure for your country on the sign up page.
