Descript is an audio and video editor where you edit by changing the transcript, with an AI assistant called Underlord handling filler-word removal, Studio Sound cleanup, voice cloning, clip generation and more. The free plan includes 60 minutes of media a month, 100 one-time AI credits and watermarked 720p exports. Hobbyist is $16 a month on annual billing ($24 month to month) for 10 media hours, 400 AI credits and 1080p; Creator is $24 a month on annual billing ($35 month to month) for 30 media hours, 800 AI credits, 4K export and the full Underlord toolset; Business is $50 a month on annual billing ($65 month to month) for 40 media hours, 1,500 AI credits, Brand Studio, dubbing in more than 30 languages and custom avatars.
Descript meters two things at once: media hours and AI credits. The free tier's 60 minutes of media and one-time 100 credits run out fast, and even Hobbyist's 10 hours a month can be tight for anyone recording long interviews. Because Underlord features draw down credits, a heavy month of transcription cleanup, voice generation or clip creation can leave you waiting for the next cycle or paying for the next tier. Free exports are limited to 720p with a watermark, so there is no way to publish a clean video without paying.
The other reason people shop around is scope. Descript is an editor, not a recorder: it does not host remote multi-track recording sessions the way Riverside or Async do, its short-form clipping is one feature among many rather than the core product, and its audio cleanup competes with tools that do the same job for free. If your work is mostly remote interviews, social clips, subtitles or one-click speech enhancement, a specialist may cost less and fit better.

Best for: Podcasters and interviewers who need high-quality remote multi-track recording plus text-based editing.
Riverside records each participant locally in separate tracks, then offers transcript-based editing, filler-word removal, Magic Clips and AI show notes. The free plan gives a one-off 2 hours of multi-track recording with watermarked 720p exports; Pro is $29 a month (or $24 a month billed annually) for 5 hours a month of multi-track recording, 4K export, unlimited transcription and no watermark; Grow is $39 a month (or $34 a month annually) for 15 hours a month plus social scheduling and video hosting. Unlike Descript, the recorder and the editor are one product.
Best for: Creators who want recording, editing, dubbing, subtitles and AI voices in one browser platform.
Podcastle rebranded as Async in February 2026 and podcastle.ai now redirects to async.com, but the product continues: remote recording, transcript editing, dubbing, subtitles, clip creation and voice cloning. The free plan includes 1 hour of remote recording and 2 hours of transcription in total (lifetime, not monthly) with 720p export, Essentials includes 2 hours of remote recording and 10 hours of transcription, and Pro includes 20 hours of remote recording, 25 hours of transcription and up to 4K export. Async's pricing page did not display dollar figures when checked, so check the vendor's pricing page for current prices.
Best for: Social media teams that want subtitles, dubbing, brand kits and collaboration without media-hour caps.
Kapwing is a browser editor that leans on auto-subtitling, dubbing and templates rather than transcript editing. Its free plan allows 4-minute videos at 720p, 30 minutes of exports a month, 10 AI credits and a watermark. Pro is $24 a month (or $16 a month billed annually) for 4K export, 120-minute videos, unlimited exports, 1,000 credits a month covering up to 1,000 minutes of subtitling or 50 minutes of dubbing, a brand kit and 200 GB of storage; Business is $64 a month (or $50 a month annually) for 4,000 credits, custom voice clones and lip sync. Kapwing measures by export length rather than uploaded media hours, which suits editors handling lots of raw footage.
Best for: Anyone whose main job is turning long videos into short vertical clips with captions.
Opus Clip does one thing Descript does as a side feature: it finds the strongest moments in a long recording and produces captioned short clips with a virality score. The free plan clips by spoken words with watermarked caption templates and 3-day media storage; Starter is $15 a month for watermark-free exports, multiple clipping methods, 20 AI voiceovers a day and direct posting to YouTube Shorts, TikTok and Instagram; Pro is $29 a month for 100 GB of storage, AI B-roll, up to 4 brand templates, a shared team workspace and video and scheduler APIs. It is a companion to an editor rather than a full replacement.
Best for: Anyone who mainly needs Descript's Studio Sound cleanup and wants it free.
Adobe Podcast's Enhance Speech removes noise and room echo from recordings, and the free tier processes up to 1 hour of audio a day with files up to 30 minutes and 500 MB. Adobe's plans page shows the paid tier bundled with its Firefly Pro plan, which raises the limit to 4 hours a day with files up to 1 GB, adds video support for MP4 and MOV, bulk uploads and strength adjustment for speech, music and ambience. It does not replace Descript's editor, but for the audio cleanup step alone it removes the need to spend AI credits. Check Adobe's plans page for the current Firefly Pro price in your region.

Best for: Short-form creators who want a fast timeline editor with auto captions on desktop and mobile.
CapCut is a conventional timeline editor with auto captions, templates, AI effects and direct publishing, available on desktop, web and mobile. CapCut's help center states that Pro pricing varies by region, device and promotions and directs buyers to check in-app, while its resource pages list a yearly Pro plan at $179.99 and note that Pro includes a monthly credit allowance for AI tasks, with each credit worth $0.01. It lacks Descript's transcript-based editing, so it suits creators who edit visually and want captions rather than those who edit by deleting words.

Best for: Marketing teams that want subtitles, translation, AI avatars and screen recording in one browser tool.
VEED covers most of Descript's video features, including auto subtitles, translation into more than 50 languages, background removal, eye contact correction and AI avatars, inside a general browser editor. VEED's own comparison pages list Lite at $19 per editor a month on annual billing with watermark-free 1080p exports and Pro at $49 per editor a month on annual billing with all AI tools, 4K export and a brand kit. Its AI credits expire monthly, or yearly on annual plans. The pricing table on veed.io loads dynamically, so confirm the current figures there. VEED does not offer Descript-style transcript editing for audio-first work.
If your workflow starts with remote interviews, Riverside is the strongest replacement because it bundles the recorder with transcript editing and 4K export from $24 a month on annual billing. Choose Async (formerly Podcastle) if you want dubbing, voice cloning and recording together and are happy to confirm prices on its site, Kapwing or VEED if you edit for social and want subtitles and brand kits without media-hour caps, and Opus Clip if clipping long videos into shorts is the main job. Keep Adobe Podcast's free Enhance Speech in the toolbox regardless of which editor you pick.
