Facts checked against both vendors on October 13, 2026.
Choose Descript if the editing is the job: you already have recordings, screen captures or imported files, you want to cut by transcript, and you want voice cloning and Regenerate to patch spoken lines. Choose Riverside if the recording session is the job: you host remote guests regularly, want each person captured locally in up to 4K video with separate tracks, and want the clips, show notes and streaming tools attached to that session. Descript is an editor that has added a recording room. Riverside is a recording studio that has added an editor. The one that starts where your time actually goes will cost you fewer tools.

Revolutionize content creation with intuitive editing, AI-driven tools, and seamless collaboration.
Podcasters and video creators often end up comparing these two because both now offer a transcript-based editor, a remote recording room, filler word removal, eye contact correction and AI clipping. The overlap hides a structural difference. Descript is organised around a project you edit: media hours, AI credits and export resolution are the units that matter, and recording through Rooms is one way to get media into the project. Riverside is organised around a studio you record in: recording hours, separate track downloads and studio counts are the units, and the editor works on what the studio captured.
Prices and features below come from each vendor's own pages as read on 13 October 2026. Both pricing pages show a dollar sign without naming the currency, so the figures are given as dollars as published and should not be assumed to be US dollars.
Descript describes itself as an AI video and audio editor where deleting a word removes that moment from the video. Recording is present, through a built-in screen recorder and Rooms for remote podcast and video sessions, but the pricing page measures the product in media hours per month, which cover any media added to the project, and in AI credits.
Riverside describes itself as a platform for recording, editing, repurposing and distributing video and audio. Its pricing page measures the product in recording hours per month, hours of separate track downloads, and how many studios an account has. Its editor is also text based, with multi-track editing, reusable branding and animated captions.
That difference decides most choices. If a typical week is three interviews recorded elsewhere, a screen recording and a voiceover, the media hour model of Descript matches the work. If a typical week is two remote interviews with guests who need to be captured cleanly, the recording hour model of Riverside matches the work. The reverse also holds: Descript's recording is capped by a separate Rooms allowance, and Riverside's editing sits behind a recording allowance.
Riverside's home page says local recording captures up to 4K video and uncompressed audio in separate tracks, and that this is unaffected by internet connection. The pricing page lists up to 720p video and 44.1 kHz audio on the free plan and up to 4K and 48 kHz on Pro. The pages read do not describe how or when the local files upload, and the help article on local recording returned an access error, so upload behaviour after a dropped connection is unconfirmed here.
Descript's pricing page lists separate cloud backup recordings, screen recording of up to 2 screens, automatic project setup and guest file recovery for 7 days on every plan. Rooms participants are capped at 10 on all plans. The pages read do not state the resolution or audio bit depth Rooms captures, and the Rooms help article fetched did not cover it, so a reader who needs a specific capture spec should confirm it with Descript before committing.
Room time is rationed on both sides. Descript allows 2 Rooms recording hours per drive per month on Free, 5 on Hobbyist, 15 on Creator and 25 on Business. Riverside allows 2 recording hours once on Free, 5 per month on Pro and 15 per month on Grow, with unlimited recording on Webinar and Business. Riverside's pricing page is flagged as a staging version in the fetched copy, and its comparison table headers were partly garbled, so the mapping of hours to plans reflects the best reading of the page and is worth checking on the live page.
Descript lists Free, Hobbyist, Creator, Business and Enterprise. Per person per month, Hobbyist is 16 or 24 dollars, Creator is 24 or 35 dollars and Business is 50 or 65 dollars. The page does not label which figure is annual and which is monthly; the lower figure appears to be the annual rate. Media hours per month are 1 on Free, 10 on Hobbyist, 30 on Creator and 40 on Business, with AI credits of 100 once on Free, then 400, 800 and 1,500 a month. Top-up media hours and AI credits are available on paid plans.
Riverside lists Free, Pro, Grow, Webinar and Business. Pro is 29 dollars a month or 24 dollars a month billed annually, 288 dollars a year. Grow is 39 dollars a month or 34 dollars a month billed annually. Webinar is 99 dollars a month or 79 dollars a month, and Business is custom. Paid plans have a 14 day free trial. The Webinar card says it is billed 408 dollars annually, but 79 dollars times 12 is 948 dollars, so that figure appears to be an error on the page.
The entry paid tiers are close in headline price, but they buy different things. Descript's Hobbyist at 16 or 24 dollars buys 10 media hours and 1080p export. Riverside's Pro at 24 or 29 dollars buys 5 recording hours and up to 4K recording.
Descript states that transcription covers 25 languages on all plans, with speaker detection for 8 or more speakers and multitrack transcription included on every plan. No separate transcription hour cap is listed; media hours govern. Caption translation is listed for 61 languages and dubbing for 30 languages, limited on Free and included on paid plans. Voice clones and Regenerate begin on Hobbyist, with limited access on Free. Remove Filler Words, Eye Contact, Studio Sound, Green Screen and the Underlord assistant are available in limited form on Free and fully on paid plans, with Creator and Business getting full Underlord access.
Riverside's pricing page lists unlimited transcriptions on Pro but names no transcription languages, and its home page also names none, so a language count cannot be given. Its home page does state translation and dubbing into over 30 languages. AI features on Pro and above include Magic Clips, show notes, an AI editing agent, AI B-roll, eye contact, silence and filler word removal and audio enhancement. The FAQ says Magic Audio needs no credits, while credits power AI Translation, AI B-Roll and Animated Clips; Pro starts with 2,000 credits and Business with 12,000.
On voice cloning, Descript lists it on its pricing page and home page. Riverside's home page does not mention voice cloning; it describes a Correct speech feature that syncs voice and lips after a transcript fix, which is a different thing, and it lists an AI Twin feature without explaining it. A reader whose workflow depends on cloned voice should treat Descript as the confirmed option.
Descript's free plan exports locally at 720p with a watermark, and web link exports are 720p with a one hour cap. Hobbyist exports at 1080p with no watermark and a one hour web link cap. Creator and Business export at 4K with no watermark and web links up to 3 hours. Upload size limits rise from 1 GB on Free to 10 GB, 20 GB and 50 GB, and cloud storage from 5 GB to 100 GB, 1 TB and 2 TB. Batch export, timeline export to DAWs and editors, and advanced formats such as ProRes are Creator and Business features, which matters for anyone finishing audio in a separate tool.
Riverside's free plan carries a watermark and is limited to 720p and 44.1 kHz; Pro is listed as watermark free. The page does not state the watermark position for Grow and above, and it gives no export resolution or file size caps in the copy read, so export limits cannot be compared line for line. Separate track downloads are capped by hours on Riverside: 15 on Pro, 20 on Grow, 25 on Webinar and unlimited on Business.
Descript prices per person and includes seats in the plan: 1 on Free and Hobbyist, 1 to 3 on Creator and up to 5 on Business, with live collaboration and commenting on all plans. Rooms control producers are 3 on Hobbyist and Creator and 10 on Business. Brand Studio team defaults are Business only, and SSO and SCIM sit in Enterprise.
Riverside lists an extra editor seat as an add-on on Pro, Grow and Webinar, with collaborative editing and custom roles on Business. Studios are another limit: 1 on Pro, 2 on Grow, 3 on Webinar and unlimited on Business. The pricing copy read does not give the add-on seat price, so team cost on Riverside cannot be calculated from it.
Riverside also sells live streaming and webinars, which Descript does not list. Grow adds 1080p multistreaming to unlimited destinations and custom RTMP, and Webinar lists up to 100 registrants, Business up to 10,000. If live output is part of the show, that is a Riverside only capability on the pages read.
