About Amazon CodeWhisperer
Amazon CodeWhisperer no longer exists as a separate product. AWS folded it into Amazon Q Developer, which is now the name for the coding assistant that generates code, answers questions and runs agentic tasks across the software development lifecycle. In the IDE and the command line it offers real time code suggestions from a single line to a full function, security scanning with suggested remediations, unit test generation and code optimization. Its agents take on multi step work such as implementing a feature, writing documentation and reviewing code, and its transformation agents perform Java version upgrades and .NET porting.
It is built for developers and platform teams working on AWS. Beyond the editor, Q Developer answers questions and troubleshoots resources inside the AWS Management Console and mobile app, provides autocompletion and chat in the terminal, and is available in Microsoft Teams and Slack. Supported IDEs are Visual Studio Code, JetBrains IDEs, Visual Studio and Eclipse in preview, with GitHub and GitLab integrations also in preview.
Pricing is published in two tiers. The Free Tier costs nothing and includes 50 agentic requests a month with access to the latest Claude models in the IDE and CLI. Q Developer Pro is $19 per user per month with higher agentic request limits, 4,000 lines of code transformation per user per month pooled at the account level, overage at $0.003 per line, an admin dashboard with user management and IP indemnity.
One date matters for anyone choosing it for editor work: AWS states that on April 30, 2027 it will discontinue support for the Amazon Q Developer IDE plugins, and it points developers to Kiro, its newer agentic IDE, for the latest models, chat and MCP support. The CLI, console and chat application integrations are not affected by that notice.
