About MemFree
MemFree is an open source hybrid AI search engine and AI page generator, released under the MIT license and hosted as a public GitHub repository. It is aimed at individuals and developers who want one tool for finding answers across their own saved material and the wider web.
As a search engine, MemFree returns answers drawn from a personal knowledge base and from the internet together. The idea is that notes, bookmarks and documents do not need manual organization, because the user searches and gets a summarized answer instead of clicking through multiple results. The project describes this as a way to save time and to avoid paying for several separate AI chat subscriptions.
As a page generator, called PageGen, MemFree uses Claude 3.5 Sonnet with React, Tailwind and Shadcn UI to produce production ready interface pages from a prompt. The repository contains the frontend, a vector search component, a browser extension and a Markdown reader, and its documentation is translated into several languages. Topics on the repository include vector search, serverless vector and AI search engine.
Because the code is open source, it can be self hosted. The repository itself states no prices for any paid hosted service, and the project links to a website at memfree.me. Teams that self host would supply their own infrastructure and model access.
