Prices and features checked against each vendor on September 28, 2026.
Cursor is an AI code editor built as a fork of VS Code, with an agent mode, tab completions, cloud agents and a code review bot called Bugbot. As of September 2026 the pricing page lists a free Hobby tier with limited agent requests, Pro at $20 per month, Pro Plus at $60 per month, Ultra at $200 per month, Teams at $40 per user per month, a Teams Premium tier at $120 per user per month, and a custom-priced Enterprise plan. Every paid plan comes with a set amount of included model usage, after which on-demand usage is billed in arrears.
The most common complaint is that the bill is hard to predict. Cursor's docs describe two separate usage pools that reset monthly: a Cursor Models pool with more included usage for Cursor's own models, and an Other Models pool where requests to third-party frontier models are charged at each model's API price. Once either pool is used up you either pay as you go at API rates or move up a tier, and the jump from Pro at $20 to Pro Plus at $60 to Ultra at $200 is steep for a solo developer who simply wants a bigger monthly allowance. Teams pay $40 per user, double the individual Pro price, and the Teams Premium tier that carries five times the agent limits is $120 per user per month.
The second reason is the editor itself. Cursor is a full VS Code fork, so you have to leave your existing editor to use it, which is a poor fit for JetBrains, Vim or terminal-first developers. Several of the alternatives below are extensions, terminal agents or open-source tools that slot into whatever you already run, and a few let you bring your own API key so the model cost is transparent.

Best for: Developers who want a cheaper, editor-agnostic assistant that lives where their code already is.
GitHub Copilot is an extension rather than a separate editor, so it works in VS Code, JetBrains, Neovim and the GitHub website, and it adds a cloud coding agent that can take an issue and open a pull request. Pricing is much lower than Cursor at the entry level: Copilot Free gives 2,000 completions a month with limited chat and agent usage, Pro is $10 per month with a base of 1,000 GitHub AI Credits, Pro+ is $39 per month with 3,900 credits and access to third-party agents, and Max is $100 per month with 10,000 credits. Business is $19 per seat per month with 1,900 credits per user and Enterprise is $39 per seat with 3,900 credits. Premium model usage is metered by credits, so heavy agent use still has a ceiling, but Pro at $10 is half the price of Cursor Pro for unlimited inline suggestions.

Best for: Developers who want an agentic terminal and IDE coding tool bundled with a general assistant subscription.
Claude Code is Anthropic's coding agent, available in the terminal, as VS Code and JetBrains extensions, on the web, on desktop and in Slack, and it is designed to run long tasks such as reading issues, writing code, running tests and opening pull requests. It is included in the Claude Pro plan at $20 per month, or $17 per month on annual billing, and in the Max plans at $100 and $200 per month with five or twenty times the Pro usage. Team seats are $25 per month, or $20 on annual billing, with a $125 premium seat for five times the usage. Unlike Cursor there is no editor to switch to and no separate API-price pool for the model, because the Claude subscription covers the same model in chat and in code.

Best for: People who liked Cursor's editor format but want a cheaper Teams plan or a $200 tier with cloud agents included.
Windsurf is now called Devin Desktop, after Cognition folded the editor into its Devin agent product, and the vendor's FAQ says plan, pricing, extensions and settings carry over automatically for existing Windsurf users. It is still an IDE with tab completions and inline edits, but the focus has shifted to an Agent Command Center for running local and cloud agents side by side. Pricing is Free with a light quota and unlimited tab completions, Pro at $20 per month with full model availability and access to Devin Cloud agents, Max at $200 per month with significantly higher quotas, and Teams at $80 per month plus $40 per full developer seat. For a small team that is often cheaper than Cursor Teams once you pass the first couple of seats.
Best for: Developers who want an open-source agent with full cost transparency through their own API keys.
Cline is an open-source coding agent that runs as a VS Code extension and a CLI, with a client-side architecture where your code stays on your machine. The pricing page lists the Open Source tier as free, with model inference either bought at cost or through your own keys from OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and others, plus an MCP marketplace and multi-root workspaces. There is no per-seat subscription for individuals: you pay the model provider directly and see exactly what each task cost. An Enterprise plan with a JetBrains extension, SSO, role-based access control, centralized billing and provider restrictions is custom priced through sales.
Best for: Terminal-first developers who want an agent in the shell rather than a new editor.
Warp is a modern terminal with a built-in coding agent, so the workflow is prompts, commands and diffs in the terminal rather than an editor fork. The pricing page lists Free with pay-as-you-go agent usage, Build at $20 per month, or $18 on annual billing, with 1,500 credits described as $20 of included agent usage at API rates, and Max at $200 per month with 18,000 credits. Business is $50 per user per month, or $45 annual, with 1,500 credits per seat, team usage metrics and SAML SSO. The included usage is stated in dollar terms at API rates, which makes it easier to compare with Cursor's Other Models pool.

Best for: AWS-heavy teams that want a flat per-user price with IP indemnity and an admin dashboard.
Amazon Q Developer is an IDE and CLI assistant from AWS with agentic requests, code suggestions and a Java transformation tool. The Free tier includes 50 agentic requests a month and access to the latest Claude models, and the Pro tier is $19 per user per month with increased agentic request limits, an admin dashboard with user and policy management, IP indemnity and 4,000 lines of Java transformation a month pooled at the account level. It is a flat per-user subscription with no separate model pool, which is a simpler bill than Cursor Teams at $40 per user, although the model choice is narrower.
If price is the problem, GitHub Copilot Pro at $10 per month or Claude Pro at $20 per month with Claude Code included are the two safest moves: both work in the editor you already use. If you want to keep an agent-centric IDE, Devin Desktop (the renamed Windsurf) has a cheaper Teams structure and a $200 Max tier comparable to Cursor Ultra. Developers who want transparent model costs should run Cline with their own API keys, and terminal-first developers should look at Warp.
