Prices and features checked against each vendor on September 28, 2026.
MemeGen AI was a text-to-meme generator at meme-gen.ai. As of September 2026 that address no longer serves a meme tool: it redirects permanently to popvid.ai, a platform for interactive AI video roleplay stories and community remix videos, whose homepage makes no mention of MemeGen, memes or any pricing. There is no published migration notice, so anyone who relied on MemeGen AI should treat it as discontinued and pick a replacement rather than wait for it to come back.
The tool is gone, which settles the question. PopVid, the product now living at the old domain, is about choose-your-own-path AI video and alternate endings for other people's clips, not captioned image macros, and its site shows no plan names or prices at all. Bookmarks, saved templates and any workflow built around MemeGen AI will not work, and there is nothing to subscribe to.
The good news is that the category has matured. The alternatives below split into three groups: dedicated AI meme generators that turn a sentence into a captioned image, general design and editing tools with meme templates and AI image generation built in, and general assistants that can generate a meme-style image on request. Most have a free tier, so you can replace MemeGen AI without paying anything, and the paid plans are all under $25 per month at the entry level.
Built from each tool's listing. Vendors can update their own listing after claiming it.
Best for: Anyone who wants the closest like-for-like text-to-meme generator, with brand kits and an API for marketers.
Supermeme.ai is an AI meme generator that turns text into memes, supports more than 110 languages and includes a meme search engine, brand kits and an API. The Free tier gives 10 credits a month, described as roughly 80 memes, with a Supermeme watermark; Solo is $6.49 per month billed annually for 100 credits, one brand kit, no watermark and 100 API requests a month; Startup is $19.99 per month billed annually for unlimited credits, 10 brand kits, a custom watermark and 2,000 API requests; Enterprise is $83.99 per month with 5,000 API requests. All paid plans include MCP server access and a 14-day refund window. It is the most direct replacement for what MemeGen AI did.
Best for: Discord users who want a free slash command that generates memes from a theme.
MemeJourney is a ChatGPT-powered meme generator that runs inside Discord, where you type a generate command with a theme and get back captioned memes with variations to choose from. The vendor's page states that it is a free tool, and while it mentions a discount code for an upgrade it does not publish paid plan names or prices, so check the vendor's page if you need more than the free allowance. It is the lightest-weight option here and suits communities that already live in Discord, but it lacks the brand kits, API and export controls of Supermeme.

Best for: People who want meme templates alongside every other kind of design, with AI image generation included.
Canva is a general design tool with a large template library, drag-and-drop editing and Magic Studio AI features including text-to-image, so meme layouts and AI-generated images sit next to social posts and presentations. The Free plan includes the editor, 1 brand kit, 5 GB of storage and up to 20 AI uses; Pro is US$144 per year with AI tools such as resize, translate and background removal, 5 brand kits, 100 GB of storage, ten times the AI usage of Free and social scheduling; Business is US$250 per person per year with team administration, 100 brand kits and twenty times the AI usage. It is not a one-click meme generator, but it is the most flexible tool on the list.
Best for: Creators who make video memes, GIFs and captioned clips as well as static images.
Kapwing is a browser-based video and image editor with a meme maker, subtitling, dubbing and AI tools that draw on a monthly credit allowance. Free includes 10 credits, unlimited exports with a watermark, a 4-minute length limit, 720p output and 5 GB of storage; Pro is $24 per month, or $16 per month billed annually, for 1,000 credits, no watermark, 120-minute exports, 4K output and 200 GB of storage; Business is $64 per month, or $50 annually, for 4,000 credits with voice clones and lip sync; Enterprise adds SAML SSO. If your memes moved from images to short video, this is the better fit than a static generator.

Best for: Mobile-first creators who want photo editing, templates and unlimited AI image generation on one subscription.
Picsart is a photo and video editing app with templates, stickers, an AI image generator and a set of creative AI agents, and it has long carried meme-style templates in its editor. The pricing page lists Pro at $11.66 per month billed yearly with all photo and video editing features, unlimited image generations on its Flex.2 Klein model, more than 15 creative AI agents, stock photos, templates and 100 GB of cloud storage, and Ultra at $53.75 per month billed yearly per seat with access to more than 140 AI video, image and audio models and 300 GB of storage. Monthly billing is available at a higher rate, so check the vendor's pricing page for the monthly figure.

Best for: People who already pay for an assistant and want it to draft the caption and generate the image in one conversation.
ChatGPT generates and edits images from a text description and is good at the caption side of a meme, so you can ask for a punchline, iterate on it and produce the picture in the same chat, though it does not offer classic meme templates. OpenAI's pricing docs list Free, Go at $8 per month, Plus at $20 per month, Pro from $100 per month with five or twenty times the Plus limits, and Business at $20 per user per month billed annually. Image generation is subject to the plan's usage limits rather than a separate credit purchase. It costs nothing extra if you are already a subscriber, which is the main argument for it.
Best for: Social media managers who want memes generated as part of a scheduled content pipeline.
Predis.ai is a social media content generator with an AI meme generator, carousel and video creation, caption and hashtag tools, competitor analysis and post scheduling, which makes it a fit for teams that used MemeGen AI for marketing rather than fun. Core is $24 per month, or $288 per year, for 1,300 credits a month, described as roughly 325 images or 33 videos, one brand and API access; Rise is $55 per month, or $664 per year, for 3,200 credits, up to 4 brands and auto-posting; Enterprise+ is $212 per month, or $2,540 per year, for 10,000 credits and unlimited brands. Meme output is one feature of a broader publishing tool rather than the whole product.
Supermeme.ai is the straightforward replacement: its Free tier covers casual use, and Solo at $6.49 per month billed annually removes the watermark. MemeJourney is the pick if your community already runs on Discord and you want a free command. Choose Canva or Picsart if memes are one of many things you design, Kapwing if you make video memes, Predis if you are scheduling memes for brand accounts, and ChatGPT if you already subscribe and just want captions and images in one place.
