About Waifulabs
Waifu Labs is a web tool that generates custom anime portraits with a neural network. The user steps through four short stages, picking the options they prefer at each one, and the AI refines the character into a finished illustration. The vendor says the underlying technology is a generative adversarial network trained on anime art.
Version 2 added male characters, which the site calls husbandos, and backgrounds, after what the vendor describes as two years of quality improvements. Characters made in the tool can be imported into Arrowmancer, a card and battle game from the same studio that uses Waifu Labs and GPT 3 to produce a large cast of characters. Waifu Labs began as a project launched at Anime Expo 2019.
The tool is made by Sizigi Studios, a small team of MIT trained mathematicians, researchers and artists who build games. It suits anime fans, game developers and hobbyists who want original character art without drawing it by hand.
The site states that it is free to use, and no pricing page or paid plans are published. A banner on the home page points visitors to niji journey, a separate anime image generator.
